🌿 Are Your Sites in or Near Biodiversity-Sensitive Areas? 🔍 The ESRS E4 requires companies to report which of their sites are in or near biodiversity-sensitive areas. This raises two key questions: What defines a biodiversity-sensitive area, and when exactly is a site considered to be "near" one? There isn’t a simple, universal answer to these questions. However, our research on the proximity issue has revealed the following insights: 🌍 The Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT), which holds exclusive rights to the commercial use of the Protected Areas and Key Biodiversity Areas datasets, uses a 50 km radius to assess proximity in their multi-site report. 📘 Recent SME Guidance from EFRAG defines "near" as areas that are partially overlapping or directly adjacent to biodiversity-sensitive areas. 🏗️ A RepRisk study suggests that extractive projects should be located more than 1 km away from biodiversity-sensitive areas, as closer proximity significantly increases environmental risks. 🐼 The WWF recommends a 1 km buffer around assets for assessing potential environmental impacts but suggests adjusting this based on asset size or sector-specific risks These varying approaches highlight the need for careful consideration when defining proximity to biodiversity-sensitive areas. From our discussions with companies preparing for ESRS E4, here are some of the key challenges they are facing: 📍 Defining site boundaries: Identifying specific locations and their ecological boundaries for biodiversity reporting can be tricky, especially in complex or shared ecosystems. 📊 Fragmented and costly data: Biodiversity data is often scattered, sometimes expensive, and varies in quality, making it difficult to obtain consistent information across different regions. 🌱 Multifaceted biodiversity: Biodiversity impacts are multi-dimensional, involving species, ecosystems, and habitats, requiring companies to consider various facets of nature. 📏 Lack of standardized metrics: Unlike carbon, biodiversity lacks universally agreed-upon metrics, complicating efforts to measure and compare impacts. 💼 Limited internal expertise: Companies have historically focused on carbon, leading to a lack of in-house knowledge and experience in biodiversity reporting. 📋 Managing data with outdated tools: A significant 74% of companies are still using spreadsheets for sustainability reporting (PWC), which is inefficient and prone to errors when managing complex biodiversity data.
