Peter Fratzl) Biomolekulare Systeme (Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Peter H. Seeberger) Kolloidchemie (Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Markus Antonietti) Nachhaltige und Bio-inspirierte Materialien (Prof. Silvia Vignolini, Ph.D.)

Traditionally, chemists have designed artificial enzymes based on proteins or RNA. Meanwhile, #glycans —the 3rd most widespread biomolecules in nature—have mostly been regarded as biological markers or structural components rather than active players in chemical reactions. But what if glycans could also catalyze reactions and serve as #catalytic scaffolds? In this blog post, Kaimeng Liu talks about his research with Martina Delbianco to create a glycan #foldamer that uses carbohydrate-aromatic interactions to perform catalysis. https://lnkd.in/eFcFtrpi

At today's #FrontiersForum Deep Dive, Prof Kazunari Domen of Shinshu University and The University of Tokyo and Prof Takashi Hisatomi of Shinshu University and Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) outlined recent advances in solar water-splitting to create green hydrogen, a cheap and scalable alternative to fossil fuels. They were joined by Prof Diana Sannino from Università degli Studi di Salerno, Jonas Moberg of Green Hydrogen Organisation - GH2, and author of the article viewpoint, Dr Christian Mark Pelicano from Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, to discuss ways to translate these advances into large-scale, cost-effective mechanisms to create renewable fuel. Read more in the Frontiers in Science article: fro.ntiers.in/FQQN Video coming soon!

Collaboration is the key to research, and thanks to the SPECIES beamline in 🇸🇪, our researchers have for the first time captured the exact mechanism behind #WaterSplitting by #CarbonNitride catalysts – or the process at the heart of #ArtificialPhotosynthesis. This is a crucial step in understanding how light can be converted into high-energy chemicals in the quest for #sustainable #fuels.
Great news on artificial #photosynthesis up on our web today! https://lnkd.in/d_nmzPEU. A better understanding of the mechanism behind the process is a really important step taken towards more efficient sustainable energy production. #globalgoals #sustainableenergy Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces

Another fascinating project going on at the AIC. These photobioreactors are designed to grow microalgae in biofilms. Our researchers Katrin Geisler Lorraine Archer, Kostas Papadopoulos and Duygu Sevilgen are studying these biofilms and optimising parameters that enhance their formation and promote lipid production. This is a joint project with partners at Berner Fachhochschule BFH Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces and ETH Zürich funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation SNSF #biofilm #microalgae #innovation #research #photobioreactor
