memetis, a spin-off of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), specializes in the production of high-quality microvalves and actuators based on ultra-thin, foil-based shape memory alloys (SMA) for various industries and applications. We offer unique technology that enables us to build ultra-compact and lightweight valves that have very low energy consumption. In addition to our main focus, the development and production of microvalves with foil-based SMA actuators, we develop highly efficient customized miniature actuators that enable high switching forces with better integration capacities and greater flexibility compared to traditional wire-based solutions. Congratulations to Romanian InSpace Engineering (RISE) for the successful implementation of DropCoal on the ISS!! 👏 🥳 DropCoal is an microgravity experiment to study coalescence between water and 10% ethanol droplets with the goal of bringing valuable insights for research in microbiology, drug delivery into the human body, and many more. We are more than happy to announce DropCoal is now operational, after astronaut Donald Pettit installed it last week in the ICE Cubes Facility of the International Space Station. 🥳 The installation went smoothly, without any unexpected challenges or delays, demonstrating the reliability of the equipment. The 15th of November marks an important milestone for Dropcoal, being powered on and operated for the first time from our ground station, at RISE. We were able to generate the first droplets in microgravity, confirming the main functional blocks: telemetry reporting, image downloading, operation of servomotors, pumping of droplets in the fluidic circuit, etc. This marks the beginning of the commissioning phase, when the team will run a series of hardware validation experiments to ensure all systems are functioning correctly. Once this phase is completed, the operators will proceed with conducting the planned experiments, following the scenarios outlined by the science team lead by INFLPR. These results will be analyzed in detail, and the aggregated data sets shall provide the scientists with the basis to expand existing models of fluidic interactions and applications.
