This October marks the 35th anniversary of the video game Prince of Persia. Back then, Jordan Mechner was passionate about animation but didn’t have mastery over the techniques to animate. So, he came up with the idea of using a video camera to film his brother performing the character’s movements. Through rotoscoping, he achieved what many consider one of the first motion captures applied to a video game. We often like to say that #SMPL is the control signal for humans in generative AI models. That is exactly the biggest takeaway from Alex Huot's message to us about his project using Meshcapade + Runway: "I have so much control". In his article, Alex Huot tells the story of the Breaking legend, Mounir Biba, the 13-time world champion and coach of the bronze medal winning Team China at #ParisOlympics2024. He captured the motions of Mounir Biba with Meshcapade's motion-from-video platform and ran them through Runway to generate the visuals. Generative video models can do so much, but what's been missing is control, especially when it comes to generating humans in motion. We've trained the #SMPL model to understand and generate the complexity of 3D human body and motion for #genAI. This is such a great use of our 3D tools. And, all of this is just using our early release model. I discovered a really cool new workflow for AI video creation - we can use Meshcapade (meshcapade.com) to generate, with just a simple text prompt, a body movement of a 3D-rendered character. Then you can use a video of that movement with the Runway's video-to-video capability to generate any visual you like based on that movement. The video in the corner is the original 3d render and the main video you see is the output from the video AI model. Plus a little bit of music from Suno I really like this workflow, because you can now define the movements of a character in a pretty specific way without having to try to prompt your way into the movements you want in a video AI model (often a hopeless task). The only missing bit is the ability to overlay your specific imagery into the AI video and we'll be very close to be able to create real pieces of content such as short films or maybe video ads.
