🏭🌱 The regulatory framework in Europe is clear: EU steel mills will face a significant reduction in free emissions allowances, declining non-linearly from current levels to zero by 2034. This shift will substantially increase emissions costs for European steel producers, potentially forcing blast furnace operations out of business unless they successfully decarbonize. The #decarbonization challenges for EU blast furnace steel mills are immense. Hydrogen is emerging as the most viable solution. However, producing #hydrogen requires vast amounts of energy, which must be sourced from clean energy generation to align with decarbonization goals. Additionally, the raw material landscape is evolving. Scrap — particularly clean #scrap — will play an increasingly critical role in producing advanced flat steel products. High-grade iron ore is essential for efficient operations in Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plants, yet its availability remains limited. Furthermore, reducing #Scope3 emissions from alloys such as nickel, chrome, and molybdenum necessitates shifting procurement to low-carbon sources. To address these pressing challenges and explore the role of innovative #digital #technologies, our Co-Founder and Managing Director, Dr. Sebastian Kreft, had the honour of speaking at the Green Steel Strategies 2024 conference held by Kallanish Commodities in Brussels last week.

Two weeks ago, our founder Dr. Frank Jackel and our Account Executive Chenyu Zhao had the chance to discuss the future of the battery supply chain at the Benchmark Week 2024 - all while spending some time in sunny California ☀️ 🔋 🇺🇸 Here are our three key takeaways 1️⃣ The lithium industry is not losing sight of the long-term demand increase arising from the energy transition while tackling the short-term challenges due to a low price environment. 2️⃣ Therefore, many lithium & graphite projects are still continuing to work on providing the supply of lithium and anode material necessary in the coming years. 3️⃣ Everyone we spoke to highlighted the importance of a liquid spot market and solutions like Metalshub to ensure robust price indices for contracts - we are looking forward to many more collaborations!
