"We have always tackled densification by creating a 'three-dimensional city'", explained Nathalie de Vries in her recent interview for CTBUH's Vertical Urbanism Magazine, "not just stacking one type of use upwards, but lifting a mix of urban functions, usually found at ground level, into the air." Join Nathalie at the CTBUH 2024 Asia Conference in Bangkok on December 3 for a keynote about how we can move from 'simple' tall buildings to exciting vertical cities. She will also discuss how we can make our high-rises more sustainable, through modular building, high-quality yet low-waste construction, and the reuse and transformation of existing structures. Examples of MVRDV projects she will use are Irwell Residences, The Canyon, the Tour & Taxis Lake Side masterplan, and Shenzhen Women & Children’s Centre. Responding to the need for buildings to be connected to and integrated with the broader urban fabric, Nathalie will also explain how we help make buildings and neighbourhoods more walkable, better connected to parks and nature, and form bridges within our cites. 🚶🌳🌆 Read more on how to join here! https://lnkd.in/ekjiNE6V Cc Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH)

MVRDV was set up in 1993 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries. MVRDV engages globally in providing solutions to contemporary architectural and urban issues. A research based and highly collaborative design method engages experts from all fields, clients and stakeholders in the creative process. The results are exemplary and outspoken buildings, urban plans, studies and objects, which enable our cities and landscapes to develop towards a better future. Early projects by the office, such as the headquarters for the Dutch Public Broadcaster VPRO and WoZoCo housing for the elderly in Amsterdam lead to international acclaim. MVRDV develops its work in a conceptual way in which the changing conditions are visualised and discussed through designs, sometimes literally through the design and construction of a diagram. The office continues to pursue its fascination for and methodical research on density using a method of shaping space using the complex amounts of data that accompany contemporary building and design processes. The work of MVRDV is exhibited and published worldwide and has received numerous international awards. Seventy architects, designers and other staff develop projects in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative design process which involves rigorous technical and creative investigation. MVRDV works with BIM and has official in-house BREEAM and LEED assessors. Together with Delft University of Technology, MVRDV runs The Why Factory, an independent think tank and research institute providing an agenda for architecture and urbanism by envisioning the city of the future.

Inclusive buildings that are open for all are the lifeblood of successful cities, providing people with crucial services and enriching cultural experiences. But how can we make our architecture more inclusive and accessible? On 2 December at the ULI Singapore, Nathalie de Vries and wenchian shi will join moderator Ker-Shing Ong for a "Brown Bag Chat". During the conversation, Nathalie and Wenchian will share their journeys, challenges, and the inspiration behind their commitment to inclusivity in design. They will also explain how design can better reflect the diverse needs of communities and users, while addressing challenges and empowering the next generation of female architects. O wow! Something exciting is taking shape in Mannheim… The construction of The 'O' is steadily progressing, with the first residents of this 15-storey building with 135 apartments moving in next year! 🏗️🌟 The 'O' forms one of the standout elements of Franklin Mitte, one of Mannheim’s neighbourhoods that are part of the sustainable transformation of the former Benjamin Franklin US military barracks. With its playful shape, the building also functions as a local landmark, and a key contributor to the character of the neighbourhood at large. At the centre of The 'O' is a public terrace that is accessible by an outside stairway, offering views over the neighbourhood. Read more on the design here! https://lnkd.in/eKxnCD-G' Cc RVI GmbH

How can we design the workspace of the future? We did by bringing work and play together in the office building MONACO in Munich’s Werksviertel. And this didn’t go unnoticed, as the project has been awarded a 2025 German Design Award in the "Excellent Architecture - Conceptual Architecture" category! 💼🏓 Designed for Rock Capital Group, this soon-to-be-constructed office building introduces a new synergy between work and play. With warm and playful materials, MONACO prioritises collaboration and bonding, alongside traditional desk work. A six-storey cubic block clad in brick forms the "work" portion of the concept, accommodating office spaces. On the north-eastern end, climbing its way up and over this block, is the "play" section of the proposal. The façades of this section have colourful shingles made by Pretty Plastic, a material created entirely from plastic waste. Inside, MONACO offers flexible workspaces, a rooftop terrace, and spaces designed for co-worker interaction, including a forum for lectures and a ‘biergarten’. This forward-thinking office building embodies a new philosophy for workplace design, responding to the growing demand for freedom, flexibility, and fun in the post-pandemic era. The construction industry is responsible for a staggering 39% of global CO2 emissions. How can we effectively measure the carbon footprint of the buildings we make, enabling us to take informed and essential sustainable design decisions? 🌍💡 Join Boudewijn Thomas and Arend van Waart of MVRDV NEXT in London on November 28 as they present our CarbonScape software at the Sustainability Demo Day by Grow London! Carbon assessments are often done at the end of a project. With CarbonScape, we can guide the process from the start. By setting up a clear framework, we can identify what can be measured at each stage, helping to achieve a low-carbon footprint by the end. Boudewijn and Arend will explain how this software assesses carbon impact right from the earliest stages of a project's design. After their presentation, there is a Q&A with the audience to give deeper insights into how CarbonScape delivers accurate carbon estimates, even during conceptual phases of design. We will soon share more info on CarbonScape – so stay tuned! Find out more on how to sign up for the event here: https://lnkd.in/e4yXSTDp

The construction of Expo 2.0 in Hannover is rapidly advancing! Jacob van Rijs took his students of the Technische Universität Berlin to check out the progress. 👷♂️👷♀️ Expo 2.0 is a transformation of one of MVRDV’s own seminal projects, the Dutch Pavilion at the 2000 World Expo in Hannover. The project will convert the former Expo Pavilion into a co-working office building, and two new buildings with student housing will be added on the space surrounding the pavilion. The design maintains the qualities – including the forest on the 3rd floor – that made the pavilion an icon of the 2000 World Expo and reinterprets the original project’s concept for the two new buildings. How can design challenge norms, and how can we create sustainable architecture in places often viewed as the "periphery"? Join Winy Maas on November 21 in Košice as he delivers a lecture at the Art and Tech Conference, exploring how to reimagine unique and delicate "peripheral" places to make a greater social impact. Recognising these areas as hubs of potential and deeply connected to nature, Winy will share how they can become more sustainable, innovative, and dynamic. Through both large-scale visions and smaller-scale interventions, he will discuss how architects and urbanists can drive a paradigm shift in these often-overlooked regions.
