SC24 – The International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis – comes to an end today after a week of exciting talks and workshops on the latest innovations in AI and high performance computing (HPC). During the event, NEC Laboratories Europe’s Falk Selker showcased NEC’s SOL AI compiler platform that accelerates and optimizes AI workloads. We presented our new virtualized Radio Access Network (vRAN) solution – CloudRIC – at ACM MobiCom 2024, currently underway in Washington D.C., USA. CloudRIC can help build more efficient vRANs by sharing pools of heterogeneous processors and accelerators among distributed units (DUs). The solution not only offers high energy and cost-efficiency gains, but also achieves 99.999% reliability. The work is a collaboration with IMDEA Networks Institute, i2CAT, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and ICREA - Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats. ASNARO-1, developed and manufactured by NEC, becomes the first optical satellite in Japan to remain in operation for 10 years. When ASNARO-1 was launched on November 6, 2014, its design lifetime was initially estimated to be five years. However, thanks to advanced design and development technologies and stable, long-term operation, it continues to carry out observations even after being in operation for 10 years. NEC is responsible for the development and manufacturing of the satellite, while PASCO CORPORATION is placed in charge of ground system development and on-orbit operations. ASNARO-1 is an optical satellite that captures images of the earth’s surface just like a digital camera. Thus far, it has been used to capture more than 40,000 optical images, including photographic images taken in times of emergency and disaster such as the Kumamoto earthquake in April 2016 and the eruption of Mount Shinmoedake in March 2018. 🛰️ The satellite bus (i.e., the core equipment of a satellite that provides the basic functions) used in ASNARO-1 is NEC’s NEXTAR. NEC to participate in and present a case study on climate change adaptation at COP29 🌳 During the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) scheduled to be held in Azerbaijan from November 11 to 22, 2024, the Japan Consortium for Adaptation Finance—a consortium jointly established by NEC and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Co.—will be participating in the Tech Showcase at the Japan Pavillion hosted by the Ministry of the Environment. Compared to mitigation measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, adaptation measures for lessening the impact of climate change are still in the development stage. At COP29, the Japan Consortium for Adaptation Finance will be showcasing “Visualization and Quantification of Adaptation Value to Encourage Private Investment in Adaptation Measures” and presenting specifics on the effectiveness of investment in adaptation measures.
