Today at the Berlin Science Week 2024, a thought-provoking 90-minute session unfolded, bringing together two dynamic voices: Lubna Hayatleh-Heinke a champion of female migrant empowerment, and Ingo Günther, a versatile actor and musician. Hosted by Gordian, the talk seamlessly merged personal storytelling, art, and cultural insights to explore the profound impact of decision-making on our identities and lives. Through Lubna's experience of navigating a new cultural landscape as a Syrian refugee and Ingo's reflections on the freedom and constraints within the creative arts, the conversation highlighted the universal yet highly contextual nature of decisions. The dialogue challenged the audience to rethink their decision-making processes, inviting them to consider how cultural values, intuition, and societal expectations shape our daily choices. The arts can teach us how to bridge the playful freedom of choice with the practical resilience needed in everyday decision-making, especially in times of change. Through creative expression, individuals learn to explore options that encourage adaptability, self-discovery, and embracing unexpected outcomes. For those facing disruptive transitions—such as refugees or migrants adapting to new societal norms—the lessons from artistic decision-making can offer a form of resilience. While these individuals may not have the immediate 'safety net' of returning to familiar ground, they carry the skills learned in the arts: a heightened sense of adaptability, open-mindedness, and the ability to reframe mistakes as learning opportunities. This adaptability strengthens their capacity to establish new common ground, even in radically changing decision environments. Two days to go. Ready or not, our event at Berlin Science Week is around the corner - are you prepared to reflect on your choices? https://lnkd.in/emdXq9At

While the arts offer a space for playful, free decision-making, real-life decisions are often constrained by practical factors, societal norms, and personal responsibilities. When someone is forced to make decisions in a new or challenging environment—such as after relocating to a different society or navigating a crisis—the freedom to "play" with decisions becomes limited. In these contexts, the comfort of returning to a stable foundation or "regular life" is not always available, making each choice higher stakes. By contrast, individuals can take these risks in the arts, knowing they have the safety net of their usual reality to return to if a decision does not yield the desired outcome. This safety net allows them to explore and grow in a controlled environment, gaining insights they can carry into real-world decisions. Three days and counting. Prepare for Berlin Science Week - prepare for a shift in your decision-making mindset. https://lnkd.in/emdXq9At

Engaging in the arts creates a playground for exploring decisions in a low-stakes environment. When actors improvise scenes or dancers experiment with movement, they practice decision-making in a space that encourages risk-taking and resilience. Mistakes or missteps in this context are simply part of the process, not failures. This freedom to play with decisions builds a psychological resilience transferable to real-life situations. Here, the arts act as a microcosm where decisions can be made freely, mistakes can be embraced, and the lessons learned can be applied in more structured aspects of life. The arts thus serve as both an outlet for exploration and a bridge to more conventional decision-making contexts. Four days left! Brace yourself for Berlin Science Week - new perspectives in decision-making await. https://lnkd.in/emdXq9At

Common ground in decision-making often conjures thoughts of consensus, shared values, and structured dialogue. However, the arts bring a unique dimension to this foundation: they offer a secure and confident space to push boundaries, experiment with ideas, and experience freedom in choice-making. In art, whether in theater, painting, or music, individuals can explore decisions in imaginative, unconventional ways. Artistic expression allows for decision-making without the strict confines of outcome-based goals. This 'freedom to play ' nurtures creativity and builds resilience as individuals learn to navigate uncertainties and explore new perspectives without immediate real-life consequences. See you at Berlin Science Week in five days - get ready; your common sense in decision-making might just get a refresh. https://lnkd.in/emdXq9At
