Restless Architecture We are thrilled to announce that SL Rasch is proudly featured in the current exhibition “Restless Architecture” at MAXXI Museo nazionale, curated by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The exhibition deals with the fascinating world of architecture in motion, highlighting alternative forms of constructions that are not rigid, but can move and adapt to circumstances or even have separate, mobile elements. The idea behind it is more than plausible: in an era characterised by constant change and disruptive influences, architecture, too, must evolve and remain dynamic. Static structures can no longer adequately serve our rapidly shifting environment, which is why we need flexible and responsive solutions tailored to contemporary needs. The four principles that frame the exhibition are: mobility, adaptability, operability and ecodynamism. SL Rasch is part of the ecodynamism section, where we present a model that of a convertible shading roof incorporating 21 umbrellas. It was already built back in 1987, but has not lost any of its relevance since then, in fact it has gained enormously underscoring the necessity to respond to environmental demands. The exhibition is open until March 16, 2025 from Tuesday to Sunday from 11 am to 7 pm and definitely worth a visit! It is time to rethink spaces. . . #ArchitectureInMotion #EcodynamicDesign #InnovativeArchitecture #Exhibition

Tipi: More Than Just a Tent – a Piece of History and Culture Tipis have been a versatile and symbolic shelter for centuries, typically linked to the #nomadic Native American tribes of the North American prairies. Their portability and adaptability made them perfect for a nomadic #lifestyle. The shape and often intricate paintings of tipis carry deep spiritual significance. SL Rasch has technically constructed a custom tipi for long companions, who live their profound connection to nature and tradition through this unique dwelling, which they painted themselves. Find out why the tipi means so much to them in the latest blog article, link in the comments. . . #tipi #tent #tentstructure #design #construction #culture #tradition

German planners and architects in Saudi Arabia The current issue of Bauwelt delves into the fascinating history of German planners and architects in Saudi Arabia. Central to this narrative is Frei Otto, the pioneer of lightweight structures and a closely associated figure with our office for decades, whose principles we still live by today. Otto, who first came into the Kingdom in the 1960s, realised some of his iconic cable net structures there that resonate with innovation and vision. The story also pays tribute to our company’s founder, Dr. Mahmoud Bodo Rasch, whose journey to Saudi Arabia commenced roughly a decade after Otto's arrival. The reason for this was his involvement in a competition to provide accommodation for pilgrims during Hajj. It became a pivotal moment, paving the path for numerous groundbreaking projects in the region. Among these notable undertakings was the actual realisation of the tent city in Mina for Hajj pilgrims years later and the development of the world’s largest retractable shading roof at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina. To explore other significant contributions by German architects in Saudi Arabia, read the German story or click on the link in the comments for the English version. . . #architecture #construction #engineering #germanarchitecture #saudiarabia #architecturehistory

Exploring and realising the limits of the constructible Standard solutions are out of the question for our special projects. Every project is unique and impresses with its boundless individuality. The Mecca Royal Clock Tower is a prime example of this. For this reason, the fourth tallest building in the world continues to fascinate people even years after its completion. The makers behind The B1M, the world's largest video channel for construction, architecture and engineering, feel the same enthusiasm about the skyscraper. With their Youtube channel, they want to shed light on the massive effort behind constructions and get people excited about buildings and arouse interest in the building industry. When they asked us if they could do a feature on the Mecca Royal Clock Tower for this purpose, we agreed immediately. We are so proud of this building, which has become a landmark and inspires people at so many different levels. Many thanks also to Stefano Delisi and Gunther Schnell for their valuable insights on the design, engineering, and construction process. . . #architecture #lightweightarchitecture #engineering #construction #megaproject #mecca #clocktower #skyscraper https://lnkd.in/epsbDE4d

Blurry Nights in Medina, Saudi Arabia Throwback to a time when the construction of the Medina Piazza Shading Project was still ongoing. Even though the main function of the structures, the shading, was not yet given at that time due to the missing membrane, the mast with the lighting alone already creates a breathtaking atmosphere. Even in this unfinished state, they blend perfectly into the appearance of the mosque. The completed project became the largest shading roof in the world, providing over 150,000 square metres of shade and protecting 250,000 people from weather influences. . . #Construction #LightweightArchitecture #Shade #ShadingRoof #Architecture #Engineering #Medina #Mosque #MosqueArchitecture

Sustainable in the construction industry? A decisive factor for us: the longevity of the structures. Once built, our constructions should fulfil their purpose for as long as possible and remain visually appealing. 30 years ago, in 1994, we designed two membrane roofs for the Sternauto car dealership in Magdeburg, which shade the entrance area and parts of the car park. In addition to providing comfort and a pleasant climate, the two structures also create a visual connection across the property. Project anniversaries on this scale show that detailed and custom planning, a scientific design approach and careful material selection pay off. Even after three decades, they shine with the same elegance and efficiency as on day one. In addition to durability, our shading solutions stand for innovative technology and timeless design. This project is a living example of how well thought-out architecture can last for decades and retain its value. . . #architecture #lightweightstructures #lightweightarchitecture #longevity #innovation #design #mercedesbenz #sunshade

Thanks to Saudi-Expatriates.com for sharing the pictures of the construction of the Mecca Royal Clock Tower. Even though it was completed over 10 years ago, it still feels like yesterday. Rarely have we experienced such an intense time. From the 23 metre long minute hands to the largest crescent and the heaviest clockwork in the world - the installation was absolutely unique. . . #mecca #clocktower #royalclocktower #construction #architecture

When respect and understanding for tradition meet technological innovation and state-of-the-art construction methods, structures are created for eternity. Thank you for sharing our project of the world's largest convertible roof in Medina and some key information about it, Svenja Maltzahn! . . #medina #shading #architecture #construction #constructionprojects
How do you merge centuries-old traditions with modern technology? The shading umbrellas at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina 🇸🇦 are a fascinating example: - Over 250 umbrellas, shading an area of more than 143,000 square meters - Accommodating the increasing number of pilgrims visiting the mosque - Designed to reduce temperatures by up to 8-10 degrees Celsius - At night, the umbrellas retract, allowing a clear view of the sky - The fabric used makes it durable and heat-resistant - Designed by SL Rasch GmbH The technology and design are impressive, but it’s the way it blends with tradition that makes it truly special. PS: Sometimes, progress is about respecting what came before.
