TOSYALI SULB Steel Industries has entrusted SMS group and our consortium partner, Midrex Technologies, Inc., with the supply of a cutting-edge DRI (direct reduced iron) complex in Benghazi, Libya. This new project will feature MIDREX Flex® technology, enabling the production of 2.5 million tons per year of cold direct reduced iron in its first phase. This marks the third collaboration between SMS group and TOSYALI in the DRI business, following the success of the two plants we delivered for Tosyalı Algérie in Algeria. With this new plant in Libya, which is capable of operating on natural gas and transitioning to hydrogen, we are reinforcing our joint commitment to sustainability, decarbonization, and the production of low-carbon, high-quality steel. In 2023, we conducted a comprehensive analysis for elmarakby steel to identify key areas for optimization, leading to a 10% increase in production capacity. Now, El Marakby has decided to take the next step by commissioning us to modernize the minimill and upgrade the electric arc furnace, the casting plant, and the rolling mill. The goals? Enhanced efficiency, reduced costs, and an increase in production from 400,000 to 460,000 tons annually, along with the addition of 150-millimeter square billets to our customers' portfolio. Kardemir is upgrading its production capabilities with a new five-strand combi-continuous caster. The casting plant is designed to produce three square billet sizes, one bloom size, and one beam blank section, with an annual output exceeding 1.2 million tons. This means more billets, blooms, and beam blanks—with less downtime and higher efficiency. Equipped with smart automation, electromagnetic stirring, and precision mold technology, this caster is built to perform.
