  • The recent decision to indefinitely ban the private prescription of puberty blockers for trans youth in the UK marks a profoundly troubling development in the ongoing struggle for the rights of trans people and access to necessary, life-saving and evidence-based healthcare. Despite claims of prioritising child safety, this decision disregards the consensus of medical professionals and organisations, which have long endorsed puberty blockers as a safe and reversible option for managing gender dysphoria in minors. The political instrumentalisation of healthcare for trans minors has become a rallying point for anti-trans rhetoric, which often conflates all trans-specific healthcare with irreversible medical interventions. This characterisation is not only inaccurate but also deeply harmful. Puberty blockers do not lead to permanent medical transition – they are a widely used and reversible treatment prescribed for various conditions, including precocious puberty. Long-term studies show that puberty blockers and other trans-specific healthcare significantly reduce rates of depression and suicidality among trans youth —outcomes that align with broader understandings of the critical importance of affirming care for marginalised populations. Together with ILGA-Europe, International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) European Network, IGLYO — The International LGBTQI Youth & Student Organisation, and The Kite Trust we call on the UK government to reconsider this harmful decision and to engage meaningfully with both the medical and scientific community and civil society groups representing the interests of trans youth and trans adults.  Read the full statement: https://lnkd.in/dcxuvaT7

  • Yesterday, TGEU's Executive Director Ymania Brown and our Policy Team met with Michael O'Flaherty, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, to discuss the state of human rights protections for trans people in the region. The conversation highlighted ongoing challenges, rising opposition, and opportunities for the Commissioner’s office to support trans communities. Advocacy like this ensures trans voices remain at the heart of human rights discussions <3 #HumanRights #TransRights #Advocacy

  • 🏳️⚧️  Looking Back on the ninth TGEU European & Central Asian Trans Council 🏳️⚧️ ✨ It’s hard to believe it’s already been a week since we came together in solidarity and resistance at the ninth TGEU Council in Malta. 🎉 Those three incredible days were filled with connection, learning, and celebration, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who participated. 💡From the inspiring opening by former Maltese President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca to powerful sessions on trans leadership, legal activism, healthcare, refugee rights, and resistance, the Council highlighted the challenges we face and the strength of our communities. Graeme Reid, UN Independent Expert on SOGI, reminded us of the global significance of our work, while participants shared stories of resistance and hope from across Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus. 🌻 Beyond the discussions, we honoured those we’ve lost, celebrated people who have contributed to our movement at the Gratitude Awards, made space for trans joy at our social events, and built connections that will continue to energise our movement for years to come. 💜 Thank you to our co-hosts Malta LGBTIQ Rights Movement (MGRM) and to all of you, who joined us as attendees, panellists, performers, volunteers, and partners for making the Council so impactful. Your passion and commitment remind us of the power of solidarity as we move forward together. 🤲🏽 Let’s carry the lessons and connections from the Council with us as we continue to resist, heal, and build a better, more inclusive future for trans communities everywhere. Until next time, with love and gratitude, The TGEU Team 💕 Head over to our Instagram page for more updates from the Council! 📸 Mina Jack Tolu + Nina Musumeci

  • 🖤 Honouring the lives of our trans siblings 🖤 Today, we come together to honour the lives of all of our trans siblings worldwide who were taken from us too soon. Each name represents a life, a story, a part of our community. We remember them, we say their names, and we refuse to let their memories fade. 🖤 Our loss is immeasurable, but so is our strength. Together, we remember, we mourn, and we honour those we’ve lost. We find strength in each other, embracing healing through community, connection, and resilience. 🖤 Together, we mourn. Together, we remember. 🖤 We demand a world that values and protects trans lives in all our diversities. 🖤 The video features the names of 350 trans people who were reported murdered, as documented by our Trans Murder Monitoring 2024 update, while acknowledging that many more lives remain unreported or misreported due to misgendering. 🖤 It also does not account for trans siblings who died because of structural injustices, such as poverty, a lack of access to healthcare and suicides. Subtitles for this video are available on TGEU's YouTube channel in 30 languages, thanks to the incredible efforts of our global community. 🖤 We thank Sharon Kil for their support in creating this video and all of the volunteer translators who gave their time to ensure this video is accessible to as many people as possible. 🖤 Visit our website for more information and resources: https://lnkd.in/ep5-NHFN #TransAwarenessWeek #TDoR  #TransRights #TransRightsAreHumanRights

  • 🖤 This is a day of tremendous grief. We have been commemorating Trans Day of Remembrance since 1999 when we united in grief to remember Rita Hester, a black trans woman who had been murdered. 🖤 Despite our best efforts, 25 years later, the violence not only continues but is actively encouraged by global anti-rights efforts that deny the very existence of trans people, fuel hatred and oppose the recognition of the basic human rights of trans people. 🖤 This year, the Trans Murder Monitoring Project by TGEU has recorded one of the highest numbers of murders (350) since the project records began in 2008, totalling more than 5,000 documented murders. 🖤 This is no doubt a consequence of the concerted efforts of anti-gender and anti-rights movements that instrumentalise and vilify trans people to push wider anti-democratic political agendas. 🖤 TGEU, GATE - Global Action for Trans Equality, ILGA World, APTN - Asia Pacific Transgender Network, IGLYO — The International LGBTQI Youth & Student Organisation, and ESWA have developed a Joint Statement for Trans Day of Remembrance 2024. In the statement, we honour the lives of our siblings and demand safety amidst growing hate and anti-rights movements through clear calls to action for policymakers, lawmakers, and donors. 🖤 Read and spread the full Joint Statement to help protect trans lives now: https://lnkd.in/dU2nbpwK #TransAwarenessWeek #TDoR  #TransRights #TransRightsAreHumanRights
