🎉 It’s a wrap! 2024 is coming to an end, and so is our Communities of Practice project in Nigeria (funded by the IKI). We are proud to share the project’s achievements and look back at almost 3 years of cooperation with the Reiner Lemoine Institute and the Clean Technology Hub! Electricity poverty is the reality in many parts of Nigeria. Particularly in rural areas, where only about 30% of the population has access to electricity. We believe that decentralized renewable energy is an important part of the solution to this problem, as it helps to improve access to reliable and clean energy supply. Within the Communities of Practice project, we supported five communities across Nigeria to initiate, plan and implement their own mini-grid projects. Our support includes providing a web-based application (link below) that provides users with practical tools for the mini-grid planning process - free of charge! This application helps communities to 🔍 Analyze demand and supply to determine optimal mini-grid size 🏦 Evaluate suitable business models 📈 Model data for comparing financing options The intense work, including many interesting consultations, workshops and webinars with the communities, local stakeholders and experts from the field, paid off: The five communities are now embarking on securing project partners and financiers for their community solar mini-grid systems. We hope that their journey continues successfully, and that this project can serve as a role model for a bottom-up energy transition. Also, with the project team we recently published a Policy Brief that advocates for a shift towards community-driven mini-grids in Nigeria. It further emphasizes the importance of community involvement and ownership to achieve more sustainable and successful electrification outcomes. 👉 Web Application for mini-grid planning: https://lnkd.in/ePNQcWpA 👉 Policy Brief on community-centric mini-grids: https://lnkd.in/eyntGtN5 👉 Recording of our webinar on community-centric mini-grids: https://lnkd.in/e-VHysi5 #renewables #minigrids #energytransition

As COP29 approaches, discussions around the New Collective Quantified Goals (NCQG) for climate finance are intensifying. While the quantum of the new goal is one of the hot political questions, it is critical to also look at the impact of finance that is provided and mobilized. Join us in this webinar when we disucss effectiveness of international climate finance and the limitations of impact tracking approaches!
We are pleased to invite you to a webinar on November 5th, at 2:00 PM CET to discuss the effectiveness of climate finance flows within the context of the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) for Climate Finance. To be aligned with the Paris Agreement, in the context of the high investment needs in developing countries, a mere disbursement of climate funds is not enough but they must also translate into tangible climate action outcomes, maximizing the impact in terms of both GHG emissions reduction and enhanced climate resilience for beneficiaries. During this webinar, we want to delve into a range of considerations of how enhanced harmonization and transparency of impact accounting and reporting methodologies and practices can significantly lead to lower transaction costs, enhanced access for national institutions, higher effectiveness and higher impacts of climate finance for the benefit of the most vulnerable countries. We will have a look into differences, gaps and challenges of current impact measurement approaches and present our recommendations to better streamline methodologies and enhance impacts for beneficiaries on the ground. Join us for the discussion! Speakers: Mr. Stefan Wehner, Founding Partner, the greenwerk. Ms. Bertha Iris Argueta Tejeda, Senior Policy Advisor Climate Finance, Germanwatch e.V. Moderation: Mr. Raju Pandit Chhetri, Executive Director, Prakriti Resources Centre

Agreeing on a new climate finance goal (NCQG) will be one of the key negotations points at COP29 in Azerbaijan - join the discussion on how the base of countries contributing climate finance could be expanded for increasing the finance mobilization to the most vulnerable!
We are pleased to invite you to a webinar on October 29th, at 1:00 PM CET to explore relevant considerations on the pathway towards a political compromise on the contributor base question within the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) for Climate Finance. It is undisputed that capability and responsibility are two criteria that play an important role in the contributor base debate. During this webinar we want to delve into a range of considerations that show potential limitations of using income and cumulative territorial emissions as sole indicators to determine capability and responsibility. During the webinar, we will also look into different potential outcomes and compromises for an expansion of the contributor base. Such outcomes may not only be reflected in specific decision text under the NCQG, but may also imply political commitments and announcements from certain countries at COP29 Azerbaijan in Baku. Join us for the discussion! Speakers: Ms. Julia Grimm, Senior Policy Advisor Climate Finance, Germanwatch e.V. Ms. Lena Dovidat, Advisor Climate Finance, the greenwerk. Moderation: Ms. Bertha Iris Argueta Tejeda, Senior Policy Advisor Climate Finance, Germanwatch e.V.

What happens during a training on GCF project financial structuring? Our experts Anna Deinhard and Michel Köhler just returned from a training in Sri Lanka on GCF project financial structuring for stakeholders from various private and public institutions at the forefront of climate action. The training enhanced the participants’ understanding of the financial architecture of climate finance proposals. Financial structuring was discussed specific to different sectors and in the framework of blended finance cases. Participants could engage in interactive exercises and acquired detailed knowledge of various financial instruments, funding sources and private sector incentives. Additionally, the training strengthened the participants’ awareness of the links between the implementation of Sri Lanka’s upcoming Climate-Smart Green Growth Investment Plan and the country's advancement of its Green Climate Fund pipeline. The project team was excited about the active engagement from various ministerial, NGO, private sector and academia representatives in this 2-day event in Colombo. We thank our partner institution Janathakshan GTW Ltd and the Global Water Partnership which commissioned the training under a #GCFReadinessProgramme.
