  • 🚀 Milestone in the SuperLink project! 🚀 On October 9, 2024, the SuperLink demo cable was successfully commissioned at Stadtwerke München's (SWM) main substation in Menzing. The superconducting high-voltage cable is the first of its kind in the world that can transmit 500 MW of electrical power in a slim design at distribution voltage level (110 kV), even over long distances (>10 km). This opens up unique opportunities for grid conversion as part of the energy transition. We at THEVA are proud that our superconductor wire made a decisive contribution. A great success also thanks to the excellent cooperation in the SuperLink project consortium! 💡 The prototype is now being tested under harsh conditions. The SuperLink cable marks an important step towards a more efficient and environmentally friendly energy supply.     This is true innovation! We have reached a major milestone powering up the test system for the SuperLink-project in Munich, which is set out to become the world’s longest superconducting power cable system. NKT CTO Anders Jensen says: - We are exploring new, exciting frontiers to leverage the potential of superconducting power cable technology at unprecedented voltage levels. We appreciate the collaboration with Stadtwerke München Infrastruktur and the other partners leading to the inauguration of the test system. This is an important pilot project demonstrating the potential of superconducting technology for optimized access to renewable energy in larger cities such as Munich. SuperLink is a forward-looking project, and once the ongoing tests are completed and the project is tendered, it is expected to become a 15-kilometer underground power link, making it the longest superconducting power cable solution globally. The cable system is customized to the needs of Stadtwerke München GmbH, providing a unique opportunity to showcase the viability of the technology in addressing increasing grid congestion driven by urbanization, increased electrification, and more renewable energy entering the energy mix. Superconducting power cables are extremely compact compared to conventional cable technology and can become a key enabler of the transition to renewable energy in urban areas due to their high power-to-size ratio. We’re teaming up with Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik - IPP and TUM FRM II on HTS4Fusion, a groundbreaking 3-year project (2025–2027) to advance compact fusion technology. The project is funded by the German Minister of Education and Research. Our focus? High-temperature superconductors (HTS) for stellarator-style coils. Key highlights include: ✅ Developing the JANUS composite HTS conductor ✅ Neutron resiliance of HTS tape ✅ Innovations in scaled HTS coating technology ✅ Advanced processing of sensitive foils & tapes The developments from HTS4Fusion will enable more efficient magnetic confinement for fusion reactors, bringing us closer to practical, compact fusion systems.   • 🌟 Innovative Breakthrough – world’s first long length striated HTS tapes🌟 Exciting news from the Filaments4Fusion project: project partners THEVA (Germany) and SUBRA (Denmark) have achieved a milestone in superconducting technology! 🎉 For the first time ever, long, filamentized High-Temperature Superconductor (HTS) tapes can now be produced continuously, reaching lengths of over 400 meters without quality loss. This advancement represents a leap forward in creating efficient, high-performance HTS conductors for applications in high-field magnets and time-varying current systems. Why this matters: Striated HTS tapes suppress unwanted shielding currents and reduce AC losses in various applications, significantly improving overall performance. This has been a major technical challenge, as conventional structuring methods can damage the delicate conductor filaments. However, with an innovative approach that pre-structures the metal substrate, THEVA and SUBRA have succeeded in producing these tapes at industrial quality and scale, with the added ability to adjust electrical coupling as needed.     🚀 This is how a WORLD RECORD looks like: we made it! 190 kA Superconductors 🚀 It took us 5 years – and now we present a breakthrough in superconductivity: 190 kA achieved for the first time - A milestone for the industry. For five years, engineers, scientists and technicians have been working on the DEMO200 project (www.demo200.de) for developing an efficient power supply for high-current applications with superconductors. The aim: to make energy-intensive aluminium production more efficient and to reduce operational costs. Now it has come true: the decisive test was successful at the Trimet aluminium plant in Voerde. After cooling down the system to 77 Kelvin (-196°C), the power supply maintained a total current of 170 kA over several hours and reached a peak of 190 kA. We are very happy about having achieved this important milestone together with our partners and would like to thank: #TRIMET #MESSER #KIT But this is just the beginning. Now we go for the real thing: The next step is the SuprAl project near Hamburg. Here, a 600 m long return conductor with 200 kA is to be replaced by a superconducting system. This would be the ultimate proof that Superconductors are industry ready. You see why we love to be pioneers! 😎

    We have successfully completed a #highvoltage test of a demo of the superconducting power cable system, SuperLink, in Munich, Germany. The full-size test cable system was 150 m long. The final potential application for the 500 MVA SuperLink cable will be the longest superconducting cable ever, with a length of approx. 15 km. The superconducting cable for the SuperLink project has been developed by NKT in cooperation with Stadtwerke München GmbH, THEVA and Linde, as well as two universities and was successfully tested at a substation in Munich. #powercables #superconductor #powergrid
