Feminist, cross-border newsroom by Hostwriter providing a space for journalists facing structural barriers globally.
Info
Unbias the News creates a space for journalists who experience structural barriers in the field. We are a remote, cross-border newsroom by Hostwriter working towards a more equitable and inclusive world of journalism. Let’s face it: The current media system is not representative for the audience it serves. Newsrooms in the United States have remained more white and male than other work places, the largest migrant communities in Germany have no representation among editors-in-chief at leading news outlets and Indian media is an upper-caste fortress. But diversity is not a moral question, it’s a question of quality! We aim to open up the field to emerging voices and local journalists who have not yet had the privilege to publish at big legacy outlets due to structural barriers or discrimination. We are proud to share that Gabriela Ramírez and @Tina Xu have been awarded the prestigious Lorenzo #NataliPrize, presented by the European Commission in Brussels, in the Feature Journalism category. Their compelling article, Widowed by Europe’s Borders, published by Unbias The News as part of the #BorderGraves Investigation, tells the story of a woman from Sri Lanka searching for her loved one, who disappeared after a pushback into the dense forest that stretches between Belarus, Lithuania, and Poland. For families searching for missing loved ones, the EU inflicts a second death of identity and acknowledgment. In her speech during the award ceremony, Gabriela said: "The truth is, migration is not a crisis of numbers or logistics. It is a crisis of empathy. It is a crisis created by policy choices. And those choices are not abstract; they have real, devastating consequences. As a journalist, I know the power of empathy to transform perspectives. It is why I tell stories—not just to inform, but to remind us that behind every headline is a human life. Behind every policy failure is someone’s loss." The award was presented by Jutta Urpilainen, European Commissioner for International Partnerships. This year the Prize received 1200 applications from journalists from all over the world. The ceremony also brought a panel discussion on global threats to journalism with Richard Fletcher from Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, Inday Espina-Varona from Rappler Erica Gerretsen, Director of DG INTPA Directorate G “Human Development, Migration, Governance and Peace” at the European Commission and Ntibinyane alvin N., Co-founder INK Centre for Investigative Journalism Renate Schroeder, Director, European Federation of Journalists moderated by Mared Gwyn Jones 👏 Congratulations to Gabriela and Tina, and to every journalist committed to telling stories that challenge indifference and demand accountability. 🚨 Brain Waste Crisis in Italy 🚨 This is the latest in our #BrainWaste series, exposing how Europe underutilizes educated migrant talent, costing both individuals and economies in crucial fields. This time, our reporter Giada Santana takes us to #Italy. College-educated migrants arriving in Italy face one of the harshest job markets in Europe. Compared to natives with similar qualifications, migrants are overqualified, underpaid, and underemployed. As a doctor from Venezuela learned, landing steady employment even in a field with shortages can be a long struggle. The investigation shows that despite major shortages of skilled labor, immigrants with college degrees are not working at their skill level in almost every country, a problem termed “brain waste” by the European Union. Brain Waste is a joint investigation led by Lighthouse Reports, an investigative newsroom, with Financial Times, El Pais and Unbias The News Join us in following Dr. Angelina Sanchez's journey from Venezuela, who landed in Italy before the COVID-19 pandemic, and her uphill battle to work in her chosen profession.
