„It was a privilege to be part of Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd 2nd renewables workshop and give a presentation about the future value of flexibility options in a vRES based energy system“, says vgbe energy Managing Director Oliver Then. Thanks to Prudence Madiba and her team at RT&D for inviting vgbe energy to South Africa again!
Eskom Research, Testing and Development (RT&D) hosts the Second Renewables Workshop on 18 November 2024 at Eskom Academy of Learning, Midrand This year’s theme is “Eskom Navigating the Just Energy Transition and an Evolving Energy Landscape”. This workshop aims to foster ongoing dialogue among stakeholders in the energy sector by providing a platform to share insights on Eskom’s renewable energy strategies, progress made since the first workshop in 2023 and to ensure alignment. The workshop was opened by Ms Nontokozo Hadebe, Eskom Group Executive for Strategy and Sustainability. She recognised that the first session of the workshop investigated the affordability and sustainability of renewables, while today's session focuses on local and international perspectives, progress made since the first workshop, challenges, key lessons learned and how Eskom is navigating and enabling the Just Energy Transition. The Eskom Group Chief Executive, Mr Dan Marokane, saluted Eskomites and the country for 236 days of continuous power supply. He said that the global energy landscape is undergoing a profound transformation and the advent of COP29 is looking at re-emphasising this. The workshop was supported by the CEO of SANEDI, Dr Titus Mathe, who provided a Cleaner Energy Overview and Policy and Frameworks. Dr Mathe mentioned that the following were instrumental: i) Minimum Emissions Standard (MES); ii) Carbon Tax; and iii) South Africa’s Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for buildings. Furthermore, the “Carrot” approach on the 12L Tax Incentives; Solar Panels Rebate; and the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) were also significant. Dr Mathe said that transition is a process and that multiple pathways needed to be followed by Eskom and the country. Mr Bernard Magoro, Head of the Independent Power Producer Office (IPPO) in the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) gave an overview of the Procurement Model and mentioned that procurement is conducted through the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). He shared updates on past achievements and reiterated that Eskom made the Buyer; Grid Provided and System Operator possible. He said that the IPP Programme has incorporated the Just Energy Transition. His closing remark was that energy security is paramount during the energy transition. The first session ended with a panel discussion. It was mentioned that RT&D needs to spend more time addressing the challenges of today and keeping an eye on the future. The GM for RT&D, Ms Prudence Madiba spoke to some of the future technologies being undertaken by RT&D i.e. the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and Carbon Capture Utilization. Most speakers said that the speed of execution was something of great concern. Total system costs, regulation and getting permits for Transmission, technology and innovation came up as key enablers of the energy transition.
