Info
The Vitra Design Museum numbers among the world’s leading museums of design. It is dedicated to the research and presentation of design, past and present, and examines design’s relationship to architecture, art and everyday culture. In the main museum building by Frank Gehry, the museum annually mounts two major temporary exhibitions. Smaller parallel shows are presented in the Vitra Design Museum Gallery, a neighbouring exhibition space. Often developed with renowned designers, many of the museum’s exhibitions cover highly relevant contemporary themes, such as future technologies, sustainability or questions like mobility and social awareness. Others address historical aspects or protagonists. The work of the Vitra Design Museum is based on its collection, which encompasses not only key objects of design history, but also the estates of several important figures (including Charles & Ray Eames, George Nelson, Verner Panton and Alexander Girard). The museum library and document archive are available to researchers upon request. The museum conceives its exhibitions for touring, and they are shown at venues around the world. On the Vitra Campus, they are complemented by a diverse programme of events, guided tours and workshops.

Happy 35th anniversary, Vitra Design Museum! »In the past 35 years, the Vitra Design Museum has been able to realize more than 100 exhibitions, many of which have set standards in the design field. The museum has contributed to create an awareness for the relevance of design in our daily lives and as a tool to tackle challenges of a global scale. Through our books, travelling exhibition and digital channels, we are reaching a global audience, but our homebase is still the Vitra Campus with its unique architecture and its endless possibilities for research and experimentation. We are deeply grateful to Vitra and to the Fehlbaum owner family for the trust in our work and the ongoing support of our activities,« says Dr. Mateo Kries, director of the Vitra Design Museum. #architecture #architect #VitraDesignMuseum #frankgehry #VitraCampus #architecturelovers #architecturephotography #archidaily #architecturedesign #design #designexhibition #exhibition #designhistory #designresearch #designlovers #designer #museum #weilamrhein #basel #thisisbasel #museenbasel #baselmuseums Images: © Vitra

Insights into our exhibition »Nike: Form Follows Motion« at the Vitra Design Museum: With »Nike: Form Follows Motion« the Vitra Design Museum presents the first ever museum exhibition about Nike, the world’s most revered sports brand. The exhibition explores the company’s five-decade ascent from a grassroots start-up to a global phenomenon. The focus is on Nike’s design history: from the company’s beginnings in the 1960s and the design of its famous »swoosh« logo, to iconic products such as Air Max and Flyknit, and current research devoted to future materials and sustainability. Following the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games in Paris as well as the European Football Championship in Germany, the exhibition emphasizes the importance of sports for design innovation and social change, while also shedding light on the almost mythical devotion to sneakers and sportswear in popular culture and social media. The exhibition has been initiated and produced by the Vitra Design Museum and curated by Glenn Adamson. In a talk on 27 June at 6.30 pm at the Conference Pavilion on the Vitra Campus leading architecture and energy experts Matthias Böttger, Philipp Misselwitz and Christine von Raven will share and discuss their different perspectives on Energyscapes. The talk will be moderated by Jochen Eisenbrand, curator of our current exhibition "Transform! Designing the Future of Energy". Energyscapes emerge where energy is part of our urban, rural, and natural landscapes. Beyond visible energy infrastructures like power stations, wind farms, or solar panels, the term also refers to the invisible energy flows passing through buildings and includes distribution networks as well as renewable energy sources. Free admission; please register at events@design-museum.de The talk will be held in german. #VDMTransform #vitradesignmuseum #energy #design #designexhibition #exhibition #designhistory #designresearch #designlovers #designer #vitracampus #museum #museenbasel #baselmuseums #thisisbasel #basel #weilamrhein Main partner: Sparkasse Sparkasse Markgräflerland Supported by IKEA Foundation Media partner: ARTE Images: Matthias Böttger © Till Budde; Philipp Misselwitz; Jochen Eisenbrand © Vitra Design Museum, Lucia Hunziker; Christine von Raven
