𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁? This is the question posed by tunnelling expert and journalist Kristina Smith to introduce her recent review of the latest developments in tunnelling for Tunnelling Journal. We are delighted to be part of this valuable contribution.   On the occasion of today's 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗨𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗗𝗮𝘆 (WUD), we recommend this interesting reading. In her comprehensive innovation report, Kristina asked Jeremy Hammond, co-founder and former co-CEO of hyperTunnel, Nick Sumption, Delivery Lead at I3P - Innovative Companies Incubator of Politecnico Torino, Prof Panagiotis Spyridis, Professor of Concrete Construction and Infrastructure at the University of Rostock and Partner at Ruler Consult, Dr Bryn Phillips from Ward & Burke and Jeff Dzado from EarthGrid, as well as our Product Manager Steve W. and our Partner Daniele Cappelletti, Sales and Marketing Manager at KERN Tunneltechnik, a few questions. As a teaser for the full article, we would like to briefly discuss the main points made by Daniele Cappelletti and Steve W.: 🎤“Data is the key to future improvements in both work preparation and for speeding up processes on site,” says Cappelletti, talking about automated shutters for CVB’s Tideway East main tunnel. Kern can now automate both locking the shutters together and installing the stopends, with the shutter moving hydraulically, controlled remotely via a PLC. This is a perfect match for 𝗩𝗠𝗧'𝘀 𝗧𝗨𝗻𝗜𝗦 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗵𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿, a solution for automatic, real-time positioning of vault and full round tunnel shutters in sequential or hit-and-miss mode. The system uses two cameras to track RAD markers on a bracket in the tunnel to determine the position of the shutters. Using a tablet connected to a central box, the operator can remotely control and precisely position the shutters for concreting. “I have a surveying background, so I’m interested in making life easy for the surveyors,” says Wojtkowiak. 𝗔 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 - 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝘁! The commissioning of the last two tunnel boring machines of the Brenner Base Tunnel was celebrated on 18.09.24. Since then, Wilma and Olga manufactured by Herrenknecht AG have been working their way north in the western and eastern main tunnels, each about 7.5 kilometres long, guided by VMT equipment. We wish the two ‘ladies’ a successful and precise journey and are proud to have contributed to the overall project with proven and innovative solutions: ➡️ 𝗧𝗨𝗻𝗜𝗦 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺: Ensuring precision tunnelling by continuously tracking the position of the TBM and guiding it through the complex Alpine geology. ➡️ 𝗧𝗨𝗻𝗜𝗦 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺: Used on five Double Shield TBMs, this system calculates all necessary data for precise navigation. ➡️ 𝗧𝗨𝗻𝗜𝗦 𝗥𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴: Assists the TBM operator in calculating the ideal ring sequence in advance. ➡️ 𝗧𝗨𝗻𝗜𝗦.𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: A breakthrough in TBM positioning, this system allows the total station to move with the TBM, eliminating the need for repeated setup. ➡️ 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁.𝗢𝗡: Our real-time shift management solution supplied as part of the Herrenknecht.Connected Data Management System simplifies the collection and analysis of operational data. 🎥 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀, 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗮, 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻! ⏭️ 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. The 14th Austrian Tunnelling Day took place on 9 October as part of the Geomechanics Colloquium and focused on the latest advances in tunnelling technology, with a strong emphasis on digitalisation. One of the stand-out innovations was our TUnIS Positioning Shutter, which revolutionises tunnel formwork positioning for faster, safer and more accurate results. In their presentation, Nadine Fenrich, head of project management from VMT GmbH discussed ‘Positioning and digitalisation of tunnel formworks – The path to automation and a modern working environment. 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗧𝗨𝗻𝗜𝗦 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗵𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿? Our innovative camera-based system automates and digitises the process of tunnel formwork positioning, providing real-time accuracy and significant time savings. Where manual measurements and post-processing were once the norm, the system now ensures automatic positioning of vault and full-round shutters without the need for total stations or repeated measurements. Using advanced camera sensor technology, the system provides precise control and monitoring during casting and curing, ensuring faster, safer and more accurate operations.
