Humanity is facing the task of decarbonizing transportation. Due to this global trend towards reducing emissions and promoting sustainable energy sources, hydrogen propulsion is becoming increasingly important. We are aware of this responsibility and have developed a unique H2 storage solution for heavy commercial vehicles that addresses the needs of both truck OEMs and truck drivers. The Voith Plug & Drive H2 Storage System is a modular, platform-based storage solution that can be filled with hydrogen in about 10 minutes. Depending on the configuration, the H2 system can cover between 600 and 1000 km after a single refueling. The lightweight system is space-optimized and therefore a suitable alternative to diesel drives for trucks, for example. Winding machines are specialized machines that produce cylindrical bodies such as rollers and tanks. In our video you can see the amazing artwork of simultaneous towpreg tank wrapping. The winding machine places a special, pre-impregnated high-performance carbon fiber around the so-called liner while it rotates. This liner is responsible for holding the smallest element in the world, hydrogen, in place. The CFRP allowes to store the hydrogen at high pressure. But the material alone is not the only decisive factor. The winding technique (towpreg vs. wet winding) and the correctly set winding angles ensure an even and optimized distribution of the material, which increases the structural integrity of the tank. Likewise, our fully automated equipment ensures that the process is optimized, production speed is increased and quality is assured. In addition to these aspects, the manufacture of pressure tanks requires strict safety standards. Therefore, safety tests are constantly carried out to ensure that our R134 certified tanks “Carbon4Tank” remain roadworthy. Gaseous hydrogen can be stored under high pressure (typically up to 700 bar) in composite tanks. The advantages of these tanks are that they are relatively compact and still store large quantities of hydrogen. They are well suited for mobile applications, such as in H2 combustion or fuel cell vehicles. The high pressure requires robust but lightweight materials such as CFRP so that the tanks can store the required pressures, which are more than two times higher than the official working pressure. This is tested by the so-called burst pressure test and is part of the UNECE R134 certification process. The tanks are pressurized to their maximum capacity until they burst. Here is an exciting video of our high-pressure hydrogen tank “Carbon4Tank”, which was delivered to the test in a quarry. One of our focuses is on improving the efficient use of materials to reduce costs, increase safety, reduce geometry and weight and increase performance.
