Reliable data is essential for addressing hidden issues like sextortion in the WASH sector. Unfortunately, the lack of accurate information has made it challenging to tackle this challenge effectively. 🎉 We are delighted to welcome our newly elected supervisory board chair, Ede Ijjasz-Vásquez, to the network! Ede brings with him a wealth of experience in financing, infrastructure, sustainable development, and climate adatpation from his time as a senior manager at the World Bank and now as professor at Georgetown and fellow at Brookings. Exciting times ahead! Ede was elected at our General Assembly meeting on November 19. He is taking over the role from Letitia Obeng, who led the board with wisdom and dedication since end 2020. It has been a real honor and privilege to work with her over the years. Big, big thanks for her contribution to water integrity. Thanks also to all the members of our Board, IRCWASH, Alana Potter, Peter Conze, Robert Gakubia, who continue to share their time and invaluable knowledge with us to change the water and sanitation sectors with integrity.

Water permit systems in many African countries that were introduced during the colonial era often disadvantage #SmallScaleFarmers who use water for irrigation and livestock. Our new #REACH Story of Change describes partnership research to assess these systems in Malawi, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. Key recommendations for #PolicyReform include:   📝 More countries should proceed with full review and reform of water resource management systems to reduce inefficiencies in government billing systems and put customary law on an equal footing with formal permit systems.   🚰 Focusing on the regulation of the relatively few large-scale, high-impact water users and ceasing to bill very small-scale water users could improve the cost/revenue ratio of permit systems. Kenya has adopted this approach, allowing for more time and finance to be dedicated to other water resource management tasks.   This on-going work is shaping discussions at international forums and has gained significant media attention, bringing water governance reform into the spotlight. The persistent prevalence of a wide-ranging set of integrity failures, including financial mismanagement, political interference, bribery, nepotism and collusion in awarding contracts, and bribery at the citizen-institution interface, undermine the provision of safe, reliable, and equitable sanitation services. In a set of six new resources produced in collaboration with the Water Integrity Network (WIN), ESAWAS regulators association and ITN-BUET, including country reports for Bangladesh, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zambia, we explore the role that regulators can play in enhancing urban sanitation regulation and preventing these integrity risks from occurring. 🚨 💩 Sanitation is under threat from conflict, climate change, disasters, neglect, AND corruption, all over the world. On #WorldToiletDay, let's act to keep our SDG promises to deliver on sanitation and make toilets a place for peace, dignity, and progress. To do so, we need #Integrity, #GoodGovernance and strong #AntiCorruption mechanisms to make sure resources aren't diverted away from where they are intended and needed most. Some key steps are: 1️⃣ Make planning processes more transparent and accountable, with open data on decision-making criteria and controls for conflicts of interest and rent-seeking behaviour. 2️⃣ Plan for inclusion - using frameworks like #CitywideInclusiveSanitation and addressing rural needs. There is plenty of technology out there, we need the systems to put them in place. 3️⃣ Assess key integrity risks that weaken our programmes. For example, use the Water Integrity Global Outlook to look at risks across the budget cycle (https://lnkd.in/dr_CzmnA) and use latest research to weigh risks in the CWIS value chain (https://lnkd.in/eidMCtkC) 4️⃣ Invest in strong controls - through civil society participation and engagement for #SocialAccountability and through strong #Regulation that promotes inclusion and addresses specific integrity risks in sanitation organisations.
