📣 This week, Governments convene at #INC5 in Busan, Korea, for the final round of negotiations on a Global #PlasticsTreaty. This is a pivotal moment where the world has a unique opportunity to tackle the #plasticpollution crisis with a unified, transformative approach. ❓ Why is just transition essential for the global plastics treaty? 📝 A socially inclusive just transition is the key to achieving synergies with the Paris Agreement NDCs (UNDP, 2022), the targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), and the creation of holistic policies and measures which work towards social, environmental, and economic integration ambitions. ♻ The shift towards a circular plastics economy impacts workers, informal sector participants, and communities in profound ways. Without safeguards, efforts to phase out plastics can inadvertently leave behind those who rely on related industries for their livelihoods. 💡A just transition ensures that: ✔Workers and communities benefit from just policies that promote job creation and capacity-building opportunities. ✔Businesses are incentivized to adopt regenerative models that reduce dependency on fossil-fuel-based plastics. ✔Governments align national policies with global goals for equitable and sustainable growth. 📢 Yunus Environment Hub, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, IUCN and IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law have created a short 2-page resource document to highlight key points for the Global Plastics Treaty: https://lnkd.in/dmtCr_XT #JustTransition #ClimateAction #3zeros #SDGs #CircularEconomy

🍱 #Foodsystems are responsible for over a third of global #greenhousegas emissions and stand as a key barrier to achieving #climategoals. However, they also represent a vital solution to the #climatecrisis and #biodiversity loss. 🌾 Too often, discussions about #foodsytems focus on large investments and systemic changes that overlook small-scale farmers. However, the well-being of these farmers and #ecosystems is key to building best practices, that successfully synergize #foodsystems and #climate strategies. The survival and prosperity of small-scale farmers are not just crucial for the #agriculture sector—they are vital for #climateresilience and long-term solutions. 🌍 Programs like the Business Incubator and Accelerator (BIA) for Mountains and Islands are empowering small-scale farmers and social business entrepreneurs across Ethiopia, Uganda, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal, and the Philippines. Yunus Environment Hub, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, IUCN and IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law have created a short 2-page resource document to highlight key points as the world moves into the final Intergovernmental Negotiations Committee meeting (INC-5) in Busan, for an international legally binding instrument on #plasticpollution, including in the #marineenvironment. 📝A socially inclusive #justtransition is the key to achieving synergies with the #ParisAgreement NDCs (UNDP, 2022), the targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), and the creation of holistic policies and measures which work towards social, environmental, and economic integration ambitions. 👉The #globalplastics treaty should elevate #justTransition from a secondary consideration to a core guiding framework for the circular transition by integrating holistic, ethical solutions benefiting people and planet.
