Innargi has entered into an agreement to establish geothermal energy for district heating in the Greater Copenhagen area. Geothermal energy is a large renewable energy source originating from the Earth’s interior. By unearthing the subsurface heat – similar to how we harness energy from sun and wind – it can serve as a sustainable heating alternative to fossil fuels such as coal, gas and biomass. “The geological conditions to establish geothermal energy in the Greater Copenhagen area for district heating are really good. So the project is hopefully just the first of several with Vestforbrænding, which will roll out much more district heating. At the same time, we make the possibilities for the other district heating companies in Greater Copenhagen tangible, which are also expanding their network and considering alternatives to biomass,” said Samir Abboud, CEO at Innargi. The latest company to join the A.P. Moller Group, Vioneo aims to be the world’s first large-scale producer of fossil-free plastics based on green methanol. To be based in Antwerp, Belgium, Vioneo’s first production complex is expected to produce around 300.000 tonnes of fossil-free plastics, cutting at least 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. We are excited to announce the launch of Vioneo, a new company aiming to become the world’s first large-scale producer of fossil-free plastics based on green methanol. Vioneo joins the A.P. Moller Group and represents a step forward in our commitment to drive the transition to low-carbon and fossil-free sources. The plastics industry faces significant environmental challenges, due to the dependence on fossil feedstock in production and lack of end-of-life recycling, with only 9-15% being recycled. Plastics account for around 6% of global oil demand with production and end-of-life disposal of plastics contributing 5% of global GHG emissions, which is projected to rise to 15% by 2050 if not addressed. Given the essential role of plastics across various sectors, from medical equipment to food packaging, developing and commercialising fossil-free plastics production methods is crucial to meet the 2050 net zero targets. “Vioneo wants to drive the transition of the plastics industry by demonstrating that plastics can be made economically at scale without fossil raw materials. The initiative offers a major opportunity for Europe to lead in defossilising the €5 trillion global chemicals and materials sector, securing Europe a leading position in the transition, in a sector that today suffers from lack of investment and innovation, as well as higher comparable costs.” - Jan Secher, Chair of Vioneo Vioneo intends to establish its first production complex in Antwerp, Belgium – Europe’s largest integrated chemical cluster – with support from Vopak Belgium and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges.
