We bring fundamental research environments and innovation environments together to transfer the knowledge and ideas generated in the labs out to create societal impact. 🥼👊 As a basic research institute, we create the foundation for innovation, but we need innovation environments to translate these ideas into new inventions. Therefore, BRIC and EU-LIFE invited key stakeholders in basic research, research funding, biotech, and innovation to meet at Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen to discuss how to support the link between basic research, funding and innovation – to raise the societal impact of basic research to the next level⤴️ So, what did we learn – how are basic research and innovation connected, and how should we move forward to improve this connection? Here are a few take home messages from the session “Fundamental research for a global world”: 1⃣ Strengthening basic research will strengthen the knowledge pool from which new innovations sprout 2⃣ Connecting basic researchers at an early stage to the innovation environments may help break down the barrier between academia and societal impact 3⃣ Statistics show that funding basic research leads to innovations much more than anticipated The interactive “Fundamental research for a global world”-session was packed with clever minds including directors from the EU-LIFE research institutes across Europe, along with keynote speakers Lene B. Oddershede (Novo Nordisk Foundation, UCPH), Jan Egebjerg (Lundbeckfonden / Lundbeck Foundation), Jesper Svejstrup (ERC Scientific Council, UCPH), Søren-Peter Fuchs Olesen (Danmarks Grundforskningsfond / The Danish National Research Foundation), Bobby Soni (BioInnovation Institute Institute) and Trine Winterø (Vice Dean for innovation at Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH).

I januar afholder vi en workshop over to dage, hvor en lille gruppe elever kan komme med i laboratorierne og få erfaring med arbejdet i et professionelt lab sammen med forskerne. Det er ganske gratis og en unik mulighed for at lære noget om mitofagi, om forskning og for at skrive SRP på baggrund af egen data. Do you know the researchers of the future, their parents or teachers? Then please pay attention, we are offering a workshop for high school students 👀 At BRIC, we want to encourage young people to choose a future career in STEM by giving them firsthand experience with science. By inviting them to work in a real lab with our researchers, we show them how curiosity can generate knowledge that can lead to findings with societal impact. By fostering curiosity, we wish to inspire the researchers of the future. 🥼 Therefore, we are offering a two-day workshop for high school students in their final year who will write their SRP (final assignment) on 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 30-31 𝐚𝐭 𝐁𝐑𝐈𝐂. The workshop is free of charge and for all students who will write their 𝐒𝐑𝐏 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲. Thank you for visiting us EU-LIFE Strategy Group 💫 We had the pleasure of welcoming the EU-LIFE Strategy Group, formed of the Board of Directors and main representatives of all our member institutes for the annual Strategy Meeting. In addition to the strategic discussions on the priorities for 2025, the Strategy Meeting was an occasion to reflect on the future of research. Thank you Kübra Altinel, Joana Castro, Andre Dias, Pavel Tomancak and Natalia Dave Coll, PhD for your presentations and inputs on creativity and collaboration in science in the following panel discussion. 💡🎨🤝

We are happy to welcome the Board of Directors, the Executive Director and the main representatives from the EU-LIFE Strategy Group for the annual meeting, which this year is hosted by BRIC.

What can postdocs, group leaders and research institutions do to cultivate better research leaders? 🤔 6 postdocs from BRIC share their insights in 4 actions that can easily be carried out. 👇 Their suggestions are published in the EMBO reports in an article, where the authors elaborate on how postdocs, group leaders and research institutes can all play an important role in fostering better leadership in science. They propose 💡: 👥𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐬: Become part of intentional peer groups; these can provide real-time advice on the new, shared challenges faced among your peers! 🗣 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬: Create a win-win scenario, where the group leaders steadily share leadership responsibilities (ideation, supervision, organization) and otherwise encourage career development plans to align future aspirations. 〰️ 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: It’s not just more money and logistical resources; institutes can train leadership by flattening organizational structures, encouraging postdocs to run committees. 💭 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Alongside enticing ideas, leadership selection should prioritize those who engage with management/leadership programs and show evidence of serious reflection on their leadership approach. The authors are the first cohort of LEAD-fellows at BRIC: James Bryson, Ülkü Uzun, Victor Oria, Ph.D., Jamie Auxillos, Iman Safari and Alexia Lopresti with support from Head of Strategic Research Support Katrine Sonne-Hansen and Scientific Officer Agnieszka Krzyzanowska. Winning the Nobel Prize takes more than 10 minutes, but at Culture Night that was (almost…) possible 🎖🧫️   Researchers from BRIC illustrated the process of drug development from bench to bedside in 4 playful activities: from observing microscopy images of healthy cells, to comparing healthy and diseased cells, identifying the differences, testing "drugs" in an experiment and, ultimately, winning a chocolate "Nobel Prize".   #ScienceCommunication can be done in many ways - at Culture Night we enjoyed having conversations on basic- and translational science with a diverse audience in terms of age, scientific knowledge and experience with science.
