🌍 Geopolitical turmoil presents opportunities Rather than slowing progress, geopolitical challenges can create new opportunities for innovation and drive growth. During a recent visit to Port Esbjerg, Professor Willy Shih from Harvard Business School highlighted how geopolitical turmoil — such as the war in Ukraine and shifting energy policies — are creating significant pressure to strengthen innovation and accelerate technological development. Increasing energy prices have created new opportunities for European and particularly Danish companies that have prioritized technological development for years. This changing landscape is pushing companies to refine their strategies and strengthen their position in the global market. At Port Esbjerg, this is evident through a combination of both proven and emerging technologies across renewable energy. The increasing demand for energy security and independence is fostering progress across multiple industries and accelerating the green transition. "I believe that all the geopolitical uncertainties are driving significant pressure to strengthen innovation and accelerate technological development. In Esbjerg, and in Denmark overall, you can translate this pressure into knowledge and competitive advantages because you have learned these lessons before anyone else," Shih says. 🚢 Svitzer to switch to biofuels in Port Esbjerg Port Esbjerg takes another step towards carbon neutrality, as marine service company Svitzer shifts to biofuels for all tug operations at the port. Port Esbjerg has signed up for the “Getting to Zero Coalition”, and thereby committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. We have made significant progress, but to fulfill this commitment, the port depends on maritime customers transitioning to green biofuels. Starting February 1, 2025, Svitzer’s tugs will run on HVO, Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, and customers using Svitzer’s towing services in and out of the port will be subject to EcoBAF, Ecofriendly Bunker Adjustment Factor. By making the switch to biofuels, Svitzer not only reduces emissions but also strengthens its collaboration with maritime partners such as Grimaldi Group. Port Esbjerg CEO, Dennis Jul Pedersen, states: "We acknowledge that transitioning to biofuels comes with additional costs for our customers using our port facilities. But it is a necessary step in the green transition. That’s why I’m very grateful that both Grimaldi Group and Svitzer understand this and will use cleaner fuels." Switching to greener fuels is an important step, and collaboration remains necessary to drive progress. We remain committed to supporting this transition alongside our partners in the industry.

How do we address the challenges and opportunities facing the offshore wind industry and how can ports accelerate the energy transition to resolve these challenges? A difficult but important question to tackle, as the members of the Alliance of Major Offshore Wind Ports in Europe met in London at Associated British Ports (ABP)’s office. There are no easy answers to this. But we need to do more across these key topics: 🌍 We need to take a pan-European approach across ports, so we can optimise capacity, share insights and coordinate efforts to meet the offshore wind targets 🤝 We need to strengthen our cross-border commitment to the expansion of offshore wind in Europe, so we can create the best port conditions for the demand of the offshore wind developers and help counter the current turmoil and insecurity in the sector 📓We need to enhance our strategy planning in meeting land and infrastructure requirements. Without the required capacity, we will miss out on great potential ↗️ We need to adopt a long-term approach, future-proofing the operations of the ports to meet the unknown requirements of the future and increase agility ♻️ We need to understand our role as a vital player in decarbonising the whole supply chain and ensure that ambitions match investments These five pillars are of crucial importance to the future of the European offshore wind sector. With the Annual Wind Europe event in April approaching, we are confident that these insights will bring perspective to the upcoming conversation about the future of the offshore wind industry. Thank you to Associated British Ports (ABP) in the UK, Port Oostende in Belgium, Groningen Seaports/Eemshaven in the Netherlands, Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co. KG/Cuxhaven in Germany, Nantes-Saint Nazaire Port in France and the Port of Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority in Poland for delivering insights and knowledge.

The North Sea is becoming a major hub for green energy in Europe, strengthening energy security and creating new green jobs across the continent. However, as European wind energy faces increasing global competition, supply chain pressures, and rising manufacturing costs, the urgency to find shared solutions has never been greater. This is the reality that we face, as the Offshore Wind Ports Platform under WindEurope discussed during our visit to the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority at the start of the week. It has never been more important for the ports across the European industry cooperate more closely to deliver on the green transition and build an even stronger renewable energy sector. During our visits to the ports, we saw the impressive progress and ongoing work on infrastructure and capacity, which are crucial for supporting and staying ahead of the curve in meeting the needs of the green transition. The great ambitions for the offshore wind sector can only be achieved if increased capacity and sufficient critical infrastructure are in place to meet the industry’s expansion across the supply chain, both for the ports in the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. We need to scale up – both in size and effort – if we are to turn challenges into opportunities across the European industry.

🚂🚗240 brand-new Kia cars just arrived at Port Esbjerg – directly by train from Slovakia. And this is just the beginning. The plan is for a similar train to arrive every week, meaning that more than 10,000 cars will be transported annually via this logistics corridor. "We are experiencing an increase in RoRo transport at the port, and this collaboration is a clear example of the opportunities created by the extension of the railway tracks at the port. We see this as the first step in a larger development," says Dennis Jul Pedersen, CEO of Port Esbjerg. The cars are unloaded by Scandinavian Auto Logistics and transported onwards to the UK via a DFDS RoRo ferry. The route also enables efficient return transport of vehicles from the UK to Denmark and the rest of Europe, ensuring an optimized supply chain in both directions. While the railway track extension has made land-based transport possible, the deepening of the fairway now allows larger vessels to call at the port, further strengthening connectivity across Europe and the North Sea. This serves as a strong testament to how investments in infrastructure and technology drive innovation and create new business opportunities for the port’s customers. With these improvements, Port Esbjerg is better equipped than ever to support RoRo transport and solidify its position as a key infrastructure hub. 🚢
