Jens Legarth has worked with wet feed fermentation for more than two decades, where he experienced that some of the healthiest and most cost-efficient farms used fermented feed. Wet feed is mostly used in Denmark, whereas dried feed is the most common feed worldwide. Jens wanted to transfer the benefits from wet fermentation and use it in a dried complementary protein-feed in order to offer the same cost effective and health promoting benefits for farmers around the world. In 2011, European Protein started solid state lactic acid fermentation of plant-proteins. Already in 2012, Jens and his wife Lone decided to build a plant in Jelling, Denmark, that could further develop the protein feed and meet the demand for fermented complementary protein-feed. Since then, European Protein have established factories in both Ukraine and the USA. European Proteins patented production method makes it possible to mix almost any source of plant and animal protein. This way, the company has infinite opportunities to design just the amino acid profile, that fits your animals, while natural enzymes and lactic acid bacteria balances and restores the gut health of the animals.

Animal Feed: 𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨 𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻? You cannot replace all soy in feed. Because soybean meal is the world’s largest source of protein. But partly. Rapeseed meal ranks second after soy, and we’re excellent at producing rapeseed in the northern parts of the EU. EU #rapeseed meal is a non-GMO, medium-protein source rich in amino acids, vitamins, and minerals, especially phosphorus. After fermentation, you can feed rapeseed meal to even the youngest piglets. Fermentation with lactic acid bacteria breaks down the bitter and untasty glucosinolates while increasing the digestibility of protein, minerals and fibres. An alternative to soy may sound expensive to you. We assure you - it’s not. For over a decade, European Proteins fermented rapeseed meal has been used by farmers to feed young pigs at a price and productivity that is fully competitive with soy protein and soy protein concentrates. On top of this, producers reduce their CO2e emissions related to refined protein. We thank you for your dedication to producing top-quality fermented protein for our customers, and we look forward to the next ten. We also came together for our annual Christmas celebration of games and gifts, sharing food and wishing each other a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. It gets even cosier each year as we dim the lights and gather even more employees from several locations at one table in our factory facility in Denmark. We also extend our warmest Christmas wishes to the night team (currently sleeping), whose work keeps our operations running smoothly, even when the rest of us are fast asleep. Thank you all for your collective efforts in making this a great day and year for European Protein.

In 2023, we completed our Product Environmental Footprint (PEF), a Life Cycle Assessment of our fermented protein calculated by Bureau Veritas Denmark. The EU #PEF measures 16 parameters influencing the environment and allows farmers and feed companies to compare CO2e emissions for feed across different ingredients, brands and suppliers.
