We are excited to have welcomed Thomas Allin as our new CTO! With a background in geophysics, space imaging, and digital imaging systems, he brings a deep passion for innovation. In his first month, he has explored our diverse customer landscape and sees exciting opportunities ahead—both in refining our current solutions and exploring new applications, including AI-driven imaging. Read the full interview below to learn more about his vision for Phase One’s future! What excites you most about joining Phase One? When I was a child, everything with a map in it caught my attention immediately. I could spend hours studying an atlas or just a city map of Copenhagen. Later on, I studied Physics- and Geophysics, and did a PhD in high-speed digital imaging, leading to me working with space imaging systems and thermomechanical modeling of optical systems for both Earth orbiting satellites and systems for deep space. After a 15 year "detour" in dental imaging, I am back working with things that truly fascinate me. How has your first month in Phase One been? It was fantastic. I have been welcomed with smiles and open arms across the whole company. There is a lot to learn, and I am drawing up my own map of the activities in R&D and PM as I go along - that is how I work. It is impressive to see the range of customers that we have been serving; from Bespoke Photography, to Cultural Heritage preservation, to the Geospatial domain with all its different demands and huge configuration space. Most importantly, I see a strong wish for getting our crazy cool cameras out there and up there, to create value for our customers. What is your vision for the future of our technology? We need to realize that the next big opportunities for us could be somewhere else than in the logical extension of what we are already doing very well. Phase One has done well in the past, applying the world's best cameras in new domains. While refining and extending our current solutions, we should be curious about new applications in e.g. healthcare or other domains. AI-driven image processing solutions are booming, all depending on high quality image data input. #PhaseOne

Enhancing Urban Mobility with Parking Space Analysis 🚘
🚗Enhancing Urban Mobility with Parking Space Analysis using ArcGIS🌍 As urban areas continue to grow, efficient parking management becomes increasingly critical. Today, I want to share how leveraging high-resolution imagery data and pre-trained deep learning models can support parking space analysis. 📊 ➡️Data acquired by: Flycom Technologies d.o.o. GURS (Surveying and Mapping Authority of the Republic of Slovenia) ➡️Sensors used: #PhaseOne PAS 880 nadir and oblique aerial camera system. ➡️Specifications: GSD 5cm, 80%/60% overlap ➡️Data processing Software: ArcGIS Reality Studio Now that we have the Data the question is how to extract single cars to evaluate the parking space situation? We can use a pre-trained Deep Learning Model for car detection: utilizing Esri's Living Atlas, we gain access to numerous pre-trained deep learning models, tailored to extract different features, in our case, cars. After running the model, you will receive polygons for each detected car. The results were intersected with parking spaces (using Open Street Map Data), providing valuable insights into parking utilization. 📊 Benefits: 🔸 Optimized Parking Management: Cities can better manage parking resources, leading to improved traffic flow and reduced congestion. 🔸 Data-Driven Decisions: With accurate vehicle counts, urban planners can make informed decisions regarding parking infrastructure and policies. 🔸 Enhanced User Experience: Drivers can be informed about available parking spaces in real-time (If real time data is available this is a workflow that could be implemented!). Embark on your deep learning feature extraction journey with ArcGIS today 🚀 🤝 Let's spark a conversation! How are you leveraging remote sensing data and GeoAI in ArcGIS? Share your insights, challenges, and success stories below. Let's amplify our collective GIS capabilities! 💬💡 💡 🌟 #AI #Geospatial #DeepLearning #Sustainability #Innovation #ArcGISPro #Esri #GIS #SpatialAnalysis #ArcGIS #remotesensing #EsriDeutschland #UrbanPlanning #ParkingManagement #SmartCities #EarthObservation #EsriLivingAtlas #Innovation #DataVisualization #esrivoices🔍 🚀 🌱

Drone inspection in action ⬇️

A real game-changer for digitisation, conservation, preservation and research for rare and fragile books ⬇️
Game-changer. It’s not often in our careers we get to witness something truly game-changing, if at all. Having worked at the cutting edge of digital photography for most of my career, I believe I have seen a few, among them the Arca Swiss CF1 in the early 90s, the Phase One Lightphase in 1998 and the Phase One IQ4 150MP in 2018. Now I believe I have witnessed another game-changer, this time for rare book digitisation and conservation. Many conservators will only allow one device to be used when handling extremely rare and fragile books - the Gräz Conservation Book Cradle. More often than not you will see a Phase One 150MP Camera System being used with the Conservation Book Cradle - if you are going to handle an object very rarely, maybe only once, you want to be sure that you get the very best image quality possible at the highest resolution, and for that there really is no other choice. But now we have combined the Conservation Book Cradle with the Phase One Rainbow Multispectral Imaging Solution. Instead of only digitising the book at the highest quality, it is now possible to extract even more information from it by adding both multiband and narrowband multispectral imaging at the same time. So, on the rare, or possibly only occasion that the book will be handled, conservators can go way beyond simple digitisation. All this is done automatically at the highest resolution and image quality possible. A real game-changer for digitisation, conservation, preservation and research for rare and fragile books. #conservation #rarebooks #books #digitization #culturalheritage #multispectral

Today we are talking to Eric Joakim, the VP of Sales for Cultural Heritage at Phase One. With an impressive 23 years at Phase One, Eric is helping libraries, museums, and archives around the world preserve priceless artifacts and documents. Let’s learn more about his journey and his insights into the heritage industry. Eric, 23 years is quite the milestone! Could you tell us about your journey with Phase One and how you’ve seen the company evolved over the years? My involvement with Phase One goes back to 1994 when the first scan back was introduced. I worked in the partner channel. When Phase One asked me to join them, I leapt at the chance! Over the years I have had different roles in sales and product management. Phase One has changed significantly over this time from manufacturing digital backs that attached to other cameras to being a full solution provider. The company has grown. We have welcomed colleagues joining the team, there remains a core group of us involved since the start, a mix of new expertise combined with a deep level of experience. What excites you most about working in the cultural heritage industry, and how has it changed during your career? It is so important to preserve our heritage. To play even a small part in this endeavour is a privilege. I enjoy meeting people dedicated to digitizing their collections and working with multispectral imaging to reveal hidden details or materials used. I enjoy bringing the highest quality tools to those working in digitization to ensure their collections are digitized to the highest standard. When I visit institutions, I am often invited ‘behind the scenes’ away from the public-facing areas where so many unique objects will be found! The demand for quality digitization is increasing. We have seen many objects destroyed, either by natural disasters or people themselves, and this highlights how important it is to make an accurate digital copy. How do you work with clients in the heritage field to help them achieve their preservation goals? No two institutions work the same and each faces their own challenges. Equipment is often purchased for a project so it is important to understand the needs of the project to provide the best solution. Often the hardware cost is a fraction of the total budget for the project. Our Heritage Solutions are sold through our Partners, so I spend time working closely with them. One day I could be discussing a digitization requirement from one institution, and the next I could be somewhere else in the world carrying out a multispectral imaging demo on-site. No two days are ever the same! When you’re not helping clients preserve history, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? I enjoy spending time with my family. I enjoy watching sport, sharing a love of F1 with my wife and son. We try to attend a race each season if possible. I enjoy watching American Football. I enjoy theatre and comedy, often in small local venues with an intimate atmosphere.
