🌧It was supposed to rain🌧 James Mugume had bought the coffee husks to fertilize his new banana plants, expecting the rain to come in mid-August as it usually does. But it didn’t rain... James Mugume and his family are banana farmers in Southwest Uganda. In his 48 years, he has never experienced a dry period like the one this year. More than 4 months without rain. Now, UN Environment Programme and the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre along with regional and Ugandan partners, are introducing a picture-based insurance directly aimed at increasing #climateadaptation for smallholder #banana farmers. The insurance is the first ever insurance available to banana farmers in Uganda and will ensure that the farmers can quickly and fully recover after extreme #climate related events, avoiding catastrophic financial losses and threats to #foodsecurity. 📣 Webinar alert: Government actions to foster the development of #ESCO markets Energy Service Companies – ESCOs – can directly use energy savings to pay the #EnergyEfficiency investments that create them, delivering some of the best returns on investment while reducing #energy consumption and #emissions. 📅4 December 🕓14:00 CET However, attempts to foster ESCO markets in #developingcountries by replicating Western-style ESCO models have in many instances proven unsuccessful. This webinar will provide insights of what developing-country governments can do to foster ESCO markets. The examples, recommendations and discussion are based on lessons learned from international ESCO market development support initiatives by the World Bank and beyond, gathered over decades by the panellists. 🌍 Science Leading the Way for Climate Action As countries prepare their next #NDCs due in 2025, The 2024 Emissions Gap Report and Adaptation Gap Report highlight the need for alignment with science-based targets. - Every action taken today is a step toward safeguarding communities and ecosystems from the worst impacts of #climatechange - Every Fraction of a Degree Matter. These reports delivered essential scientific foundations for #COP29 discussions, urging leaders to turn data into decisive #ClimateAction. The Emissions Gap Report revealed that without ambitious emissions cuts, global temperatures could rise by up to 3.1°C by the century’s end. To stay on the 1.5°C trajectory, countries must slash emissions by 42% by 2030 and 57% by 2035—requiring rapid action on #renewable #energy, #EnergyEfficiency, and #NatureBasedSolutions. Meanwhile, the Adaptation Gap Report emphasized a growing divide between current #adaptation efforts and the scale of climate risks. It called for enhanced financing and implementation of adaptation measures to protect the most vulnerable and drive #SustainableDevelopment. 📘 Dive into the reports for actionable insights: #EmissionsGap Report 👉 https://lnkd.in/d4AKr5Te #AdaptationGap Report 👉 https://lnkd.in/gZbq-dRz

Yesterday I visited The Lusaka Cancer Diseases Hospital together with Malene Wiinblad from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Denmark. We are in Lusaka to visit the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre– Copenhagen Climate Center’s initiative, where four pilot sites have been chosen to implement energy-efficient LED lighting. A program that aims at enhancing energy efficiency in critical public institutions. One hospital is already well under way. The hospital has already embraced several energy-saving measures. For instance, some wards had transitioned to LED lighting even before being selected for UNEP-CCC support. Additionally, plans are underway to replace six outdated MRI and CT scanners with nine energy-efficient models. A health clinic is also happy to receive the support from UNEP-CCC to switch to LED lighting and thereby hope to reduce their debt to the Electricity Company. However, the ambition of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development is to assist the clinic in develop the first climate friendly and energy efficient hospital in Zambia. They want to initiate the idea by looking at alternative climate friendly building materials and prepare a design that could function with passive ventilation only. Their ambition is inspired by BIG – and of course they would love to see BIG design this hospital. But they are also realistic!!! The first steps on this journey could be with assistance from UNEP-CCC to assess the market for climate friendly building materials in Zambia. What’s not like.
