Why are new varieties not gaining traction among farmers despite the change in climate? Why are they still stuck to varieties that were produced over 20 years ago? To advance integrated risk management solutions for smallholder farmers in Africa, we partnered with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) to accelerate seed varietal turnover. In 7 counties in Kenya, we provided trial seed packs and hosted cooking demonstrations to identify producer and consumer preferences influencing varietal adoption. By bundling #insurance with these trials, we encouraged #technology #adoption while protecting farmers against climate risks, significantly boosting their willingness to embrace new seed varieties. As an ongoing gender action approach, we partnered with a popular television show, Shamba Shape-Up and International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) to produce an edutainment video messaging on #gender #inclusion dubbed 'the wise woman'. Through this video; https://lnkd.in/dpQ3RttZ we highlight critical topics, including: - The Power of Joint decision-making: Encouraging both men and women to make farming and financial decisions together for stronger household outcomes. - Breaking gender stereotypes: Addressing the myths that limit women’s roles in agriculture and highlighting their essential contributions to resilient farming practices. - Confronting intimate partner violence: Emphasizing the importance of safe, supportive family environments. - Resilient risk management strategies: From purchasing high-quality seeds to adopting climate-resilient practices. Join us as we work toward building #sustainable, #inclusive agricultural communities. Through platforms like Shamba Shape-up, we reach farmers with practical, actionable guidance that transform lives. With nearly 55% penetration of smartphones and internet access now reaching 43% in Africa, we're seeing a real shift toward resilience in agriculture! At ACRE Africa, we are harnessing these advances to make innovative insurance solutions accessible to smallholder farmers, helping them protect their crops and livelihoods from climate-related risks. A great example of this approach is our novel Picture Based Insurance solution that we scaled in Uganda, where weather-indexed insurance is transforming banana farming by helping farmers mitigate losses. Through partnership with Agro Consortium (U) Limited and Banana Industrial Research & Development Center and funding from #AdaptationFund through the #NDCActionProject; a joint initiative between the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre (UNEP-CCC), we are implementing this to farmers in Uganda. Our participation at the recent #ICII2024 where we were represented by our COO, Stella Kimani and our Projects Manager, Linda Busienei was invaluable in connecting with global leaders in inclusive insurance. Learning from models like the Philippines' CARD and India’s insurance subsidy program highlights pathways to help us close the insurance gap for Africa's smallholder farmers. We're honored to have been part of this critical dialogue and to champion inclusive insurance for Africa’s farmers.

International Conference in Inclusive Insurance (ICII) 2024 Kathmandu, Nepal. I had the great honor of attending #ICII2024, and it was nothing short of full immersion into matters of inclusive insurance. Learning what different geographies are doing to make insurance inclusive was insightful. My key take-home includes: 1. The Philippines sets an excellent example of inclusive insurance. Worth emulating is the CARD program, last mile distribution through 2000+ Nanay's (agents) reaching 20M+ low-income individuals. Critical to this model is the trust developed between the Nanays and the people they serve. ACRE Africa's Village Champions (agents) play a similar role in creating awareness, developing trust, and distributing microinsurance to smallholder farmers. It was an honor to get an autographed copy of Covering Nanay by Lorenzo Chan (CEO Pioneer Insurance) and Dr. Jaime Aristotle B. Alip, the visionaries behind the CARD program. 2. On the invitation of Microinsurance Master Enock Sing'oei, I had the privilege to listen to two great microinsurance masters, Michael J. McCord and Richard Leftley. The journey on micro insurance did start a while back. While a lot has been achieved, much more must be done to innovate around making insurance more inclusive. This year marks ACRE's 10 years in microinsurance, particularly agriculture, covering 5M+ farmers in six African countries. As an ecosystem, we have barely scratched the surface; with less than 3% of farmers insured in Africa, our work is cut out! 3. Some successful National Agricultural Insurance Schemes have heavy government subsidies. India, for instance, subsidizes insurance by 80%, with 12% ($1.7B) of the agriculture budget dedicated to the insurance subsidy. To ensure food security, public and private players should invest in building farmers' resilience against risks, especially climate-related shocks. 4. In a session on closing the gender protection gap, it was great to learn different approaches to integrating gender. Shield for She, a report published by IFC, provides some recommendations for how insurance companies can better serve women, including developing products tailored to their needs. ACRE's recent addition to IFC-ILO's Women's Community of Practice will allow us to strengthen our gender inclusion interventions. 5. Digital tools have incrementally become instrumental in making insurance accessible and efficient. Governments and private players use these tools in yield estimation, loss assessment, policy placement, claims management, advisory, and early warning signs. ACRE's Digibima and TARA platforms are designed to offer these solutions to improve efficiency in microinsurance. It was great making new contacts and reconnecting with great friends and colleagues. How can innovative risk mitigation solutions like crop insurance contribute to securing #foodsystems? By helping farmers manage climate risks, we’re contributing to: - Consistent crop production, even in tough seasons - Stability in food prices for local communities - Support for sustainable farming practices that secure long-term food availability Through funding by International Development Research Centre (IDRC) for innovative solutions like Picture-Based crop insurance, we’re expanding coverage to critical value chains thus creating pathways toward food security and farmers resilience for the future. About yesterday at #ICII2024 in Nepal!! Our Program Manager, Linda Busienei shared on our Village Champion distribution model and how it plays a critical role in ensuring the uptake of #microinsurance among smallholder farmers in Africa. By addressing key challenges such as #access, #affordability, #awareness, and #trust, this model is empowering rural communities and enhancing climate resilience. We are excited about this new partnership with Clim-Eat and GIZ Kenya to sensitize farmers on agriculture insurance to improve uptake among smallholder farmers in Kenya.
First deal in full action in #Kenya! 🇰🇪 In Kenya, less than 1% of #farmers🌱 and #pastoralists🐄 take up agricultural #insurance, despite the huge challenges with #climatechange. One reason for this is the limited availability of insurance services, but moreover, it is a huge lack of trust and very limited #information provision. Last week, my Clim-Eat colleagues Daan Schuttenbelt, Kevin Gitau Ng'ang'a and I conducted a baseline study for our pilot project on #agricultural #insurance in #Makueni and #Nandi Counties. In Makueni, we first look at the #greengram, #beans and #maize value chains, whereas in Nandi we focus on #maize, #potatoes and #livestock. The engagements with farmers and other key stakeholders have shown that clear information provision is essential(❗) for farmers to consider taking up insurance. We will continue to work with ACRE Africa and GIZ Kenya to ensure that this information is provided and that farmers can receive #compensation💰 for climate-induced losses on their farms. This is only the start, so stay tuned for further lessons to be shared in the coming months! Dr. Sophia Baumert Kennedy Okech Lila Nyokabi Denis Kiogora Stella Kimani Amos Ruto Lina Rachel Ngige lydhia kiswii Also big thanks to the Trafigura Foundation and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH for their support to Clim-Eat in Kenya!
