Co-creating urban forests with the power of community imagination and augmented reality

Om os

A 4D design tool for regenerative landscapes with co-design front and centre. We’re here to help create community led cityscapes. The transformation towards sustainable and smart cities with minimum carbon footprints is, without a doubt, one of the greatest challenges of our time. There is an urgent need for more inclusion of civil society in this process. The idea of city dwellers co-creating their cities together with the private and public sector is on the rise with more and more cities across the world successfully involving people in planning decisions. Enhancement of nature in the urban image is often picked as a top priority. Wild Streets sets out to make the task of designing our cities’ green urban infrastructure a participatory project. The project comes at a time when political and public support for greening initiatives at all scales is increasing. Wild Streets aims to serve as a transformative facilitating tool for these projects and for the rapid transition towards a greener urban future. Wild Streets pushes the notion of what is possible in the world of city planning and citizens involvement in shaping the green cities of tomorrow—it offers an inclusive, fun, and innovative approach to trigger a green makeover of the cityscape by infusing the public with a new sense of ownership of their city, whilst making it more sustainable and liveable.

I didn't take too many pictures at the Blue Earth Summit. I was too busy talking and listening. A very good event, if totally exhausting for those of us more used to being in the woods, chatting to mushrooms. I'm glad to have been there! Great conversations around Wild Streets investment, Community greening, Access to nature, Rewilding cities, and Augmented Imagination (that's what we do, the better version of AI!) It was a pleasure to meet so many committed people making the world a better place. I hope to you again, and become familiar faces on great future projects! I have recently been working on something we’ve wanted to do for a long time at Wild Streets - to estimate our potential carbon benefit. We’re a business with a climate mission, we started Wild Streets to have a positive effect on the climate, not merely aiming to be as ‘least bad’ as possible. The better we are as a business, the more carbon we can remove or prevent from release, and the better we can make our cityscapes. So, all that said, what scale of potential is there here? Are we talking grams, or tons? I’m a big fan of back-of-the-envelope calculations - Practical assumptions to see of something’s got legs: The estimate is based on a really useful figure of carbon benefit for peri-urban forests per Hectare, derived by our advisory group member Ana Macias, expert in urban forestry. This includes values for the carbon sequestration of the growing trees, the carbon benefit of the cooling they provide in summer and their wind shelter in winter. It’s a figure for Madrid, so here I have extrapolated for large cities in Southern Europe. Places with similarly hot summers and growing conditions, and in which we aim to launch Wild Streets within the next few years. Facilitating companies working in the built environment, community groups and councils to make better, more ambitious greening happen more quickly. Right, so is it a big number? If we accelerate the increase of urban forest to 50% ontop of what they already have, the benefit of that improvement would be about 1 metric megaton of CO2 (1MT) per year. Is that a big number? Yes, it is, and that’s why we’re doing it. it’s equivalent to about a million people’s transatlantic flights. Imagine if Wild Streets were used all over the world, how many cities could become radically green, and how big would that number be then? Our ambition is to be much more widespread and with greater urban forest increases, so consider this figure a staring point. It’s not gigatons; with humility, we’re not claiming to have a global panacea for all our climate challenges. But this shows that in parallel with all the other benefits this action can have in our cities: improved quality of life and the biodiversity richness we can achieve - it’s exceptional value for the comparatively low cost. The role of imagination based particpatory democracy for massively greening our cities is a no brainer. Invest in Wild Streets today > investor.wildstreets.com

We cannot wait to be able to support competitions like this (UpLink - World Economic Forum Salesforce CITIES FORUM)! Or initiatives like the Pineapples Awards (Festival of Places Christine Murray), or the Mayor of London's Future Neighbourhoods 2030 ... we could go on! Wild Streets will enable locals with really good ideas to put strong, meaningful visuals behind their visions, and allow anyone to take a step into their plans in real time. While at the same time making sure that their ideas are futureproofed by letting Wild Streets' algorithm choose the best greenery for the location optimised for people and the planet.

Hooray for ambitious rethinking of precious city space! We’d love to see Wild Streets in use on the ground on this project, offering locals and visitors a chance to stress test proposals in real time using their mobile phones, and make suggestions for change that can be incorporated into the final designs. We're talking to Westminster City Council about working just around the corner of Regent Street, so that citizens can help work out the detail of these visions and make them full of meaningful spaces; green streets where people, communities and the rest of nature can thrive. An imaginative re-use of street is one of the things we love most, and it’s our mission to help happen it more widely - on less iconic streets too, the places where people live and can benefit the most. 🌳 Wild Streets Update: Where we’ve been and where we’re at 🏃♂️ Wild Streets is a passion project. Not just by its founders, but also by the huge network of professionals working on greening cities and public engagement. These allies span private practices, councils, public institutions, and NGOs. As a concept, Wild Streets has evolved through countless conversations across our network, shaping our understanding of the shortcomings within the planning and placemaking process that prevent impactful green places from coming to life. We came together to make this from mixed backgrounds: in macroeconomics, sustainable development, and design engineering. Together with our seasoned developer, Set Snail, we have worked towards creating an Augmented Reality tool that is built on scientific data, and with an extremely beautiful and immersive experience. What we have arrived at today far exceeds the humble concept we first presented to bodies like Trees & Design Action Group (Sue James), C40 Cities, Transport for London and the Design Council who encouraged us from day one. The past year has been critical in transforming Wild Streets from an ambitious concept to a climate tech start-up with real commercial potential. Financial advisors, VCs and potential investors have turned our business model inside out. At the end of that (admittedly, painful) process, we’ve arrived at a SaaS model that checks all the boxes we are committed to: empowering citizens to be meaningfully involved in shaping where they live, enabling design practices of all sizes to use this cutting-edge software cost-effectively in their work, while offering councils, public institutions and NGOs free/heavily subsidised access to the same tool. In the past few months, we’ve started welcoming members to our Seed Collective, which will help us kickstart the development of Wild Streets. We’ve been invited to several dream projects that we’ll soon share more about with the likes of (Westminster City Council, The Crown Estate, Dark Matter Labs, and Natural England). Keep an eye out for updates as things speed up, and get in touch with Ascha Lychett Pedersen if you want to join the journey as a member with a special seat at the table. Many thanks to all who have helped this far!

🌳 Trees for Cities joins Wild Streets' Seed Collective 🌱     We’re excited to share the news that Wild Streets and Trees for Cities are preparing the ground to work together in the future. We both share a vision of cities full of life, with healthy treescapes loved by locals. For over 30 years, environmental charity Trees for Cities has worked with local communities to plant urban trees and woodland, cultivating lasting change by revitalising forgotten spaces, creating healthier environments, and getting people excited about growing and eating healthy food. Trees for Cities works directly with communities, wields the spades, and puts roots into soil. They have a track record of making cities across the UK greener for 31 years. Wild Streets is a new innovative (4D/AR) digital tool for citizens and planners to work together to create visions for greener cities. Imaginatively developing more ambitious treescapes of greatest benefit to people and planet.    Trees for Cities has recently joined the Wild Streets Seed Collective, a group of pioneers who are investing in us as we get started. They understand the financial potential of the business, and crucially they instinctively understand our mission. All those who have agreed to invest are experts in their field; in trees and treescapes, in large-scale urban infrastructure, in community consultation, in architecture, and more.     This group is a powerhouse of know-how, and we’re thrilled to have Trees for Cities on board to help us make this tool the best it can be 🚀 .   Do you share our Members' passion for our planet and for creating future-ready cities? Get in touch with Ascha Lychett Pedersen, and read much more about the project at www.wildstreets.com. Kate Sheldon Michael Peacock Janine Hawkins

Our funding quest is progressing rapidly, and soon we'll announce the members of Wild Streets’ Seed Collective, a small group of visionary people who share our belief that cities can be ecological hotspots, with huge low-carbon benefits, and for our collective well-being too. We’re close to 40 percent and, so, still welcoming new members that can help us reach our 100K funding target. For the past year, Max Farrell has served as our NED and played a pivotal part in the major leaps we’ve seen. From welcoming us into his abundant network of built environment experts and creatives, and business mentoring, to compassionate cheering - Max has become a cherished part of the Wild Streets family. Max said: "I truly believe that Wild Streets is a game changer for people's ability to influence how green and resilient the towns and cities are that they live in. If you are not already a member of the Seed Collective then you really should be. This is more than just a piece of software it is a movement and I am delighted to have played a small part in making it happen".             Now, on the brink of a new exciting chapter with the development of the advanced prototype being imminent, it’s time for a different type of expertise to help shape Wild Streets. Max will still be connected at an arm's length; as a founding member of the Seed Collective. We’re immensely proud to welcome Sue Morgan FRSA as our new Non-Executive Director. With over 25 years experience of working at the interface of the built and natural environment, Sue represents an organic transition as we will focus on preparing Wild Streets for distribution. Sue has supported the design of regenerative, resilient, and equitable cities, that place landscape and nature at the heart, with a specific focus on systemic governance change and long-term stewardship mechanisms. She has been the CEO of the Landscape Institute, Wandle Valley Regional Park Trust, and Design Council, as well as being the founder of the Bankside Open Spaces Trust and her own consultancy Around the Block. She has held senior positions with London local authorities, Groundwork London, Better Bankside, and BSRIA. Sue said: “Never has there been more urgency to make our cities and towns, resilient, greener, nature positive and regenerative for our citizens. To accomplish this we need commitment, the right design skills and tools to make hospitable inclusive places. This is why I am supporting Wild Streets as an immersive, real-time design tool that will support designers, civic leaders and communities alike, to address the challenges of climate change.” For more information, contact Ascha Lychett Pedersen at ascha.pedersen@wildstreets.com.

We’re launching a limited early-stage (SEIS-approved) investment round. We’re looking for 20 visionary people willing to invest £5K who share our belief and ambitious vision for an amazing future, and so help thousands and millions of people in the coming years share their ambitious visions too. With huge benefits for the people that live in them, and a natural path toward carbon zero societies. 🌱 We have some interest already, so join us as an early-stage funder and become a member of this "Seed Collective". Helping to sow the seeds of Wild Streets and enabling it to bloom. The renowned app developer Set Snail are shareholders in the journey too, and we are ready to make an advanced prototype to enable pre-sales and pave the way for seed funding.
