  • Toomas_Hendrik Ilves is a renowned Estonian statesman, whose impact spans from Estonia’s entry into the EU to his time as president. His leadership is often highlighted for fostering innovation, advocating for European integration, and elevating Estonia’s international standing. He is also a small forest owner, who wants to ensure his family farm has a positive impact in the climate fight and avoids becoming a burden for future generations. Which is exactly why he partnered with Arbonics. This conversation between Toomas_Hendrik Ilves and our co-founder Kristjan Lepik isn’t just for landowners looking to join carbon projects. It’s for anyone who wants to dive deeper into understanding the role forests play practically, legislatively, and emotionally in Europe as we gear up in the fight against climate change. The conversation is honest, easy to follow and insightful. We’ll be sharing several of our favourite moments over the upcoming month, but feel free to listen to the full episode now by visiting the link in the comments below.

The adoption of Article 6 at COP29 marks a significant step forward for global climate cooperation, setting the stage for more transparent, accountable, and equitable carbon markets. As the EU advances its Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF), aligning these frameworks will be essential to scaling high-integrity climate solutions. In our latest article, written by our verification lead Mario, we dive into what this means for carbon markets how Arbonics is preparing to lead in this evolving landscape. • "The voluntary carbon markets must ensure integrity and avoid becoming the 'wild west' of offsets” - our co-founder, Lisett Luik. At Arbonics, our values—measurable impact for forests, joyfully data-backed insights, and space-travel-level performance—guide us in delivering projects that are executed to the highest standards. On the Wicked Problems podcast, Lisett joined Richard Delevan to discuss how these principles are shaping the future of carbon markets and the vital role of nature-based solutions in Europe’s climate strategy. This is the future we’re working towards. Carbon markets are as controversial as ever, despite finalising Article 6 of the Paris Agreement at COP29 in Baku. If anything, the contrast between them (esp North-South transfers) and the climate finance impasse has prompted even tougher questions. But we thought we'd take a step back from the furore and the "straw man" arguments that often get trotted out and instead look for a "steel man" case for nature-based carbon removals (CDR). Lisett Luik of Arbonics joined me for a chat on Wicked Problems - Climate Tech Conversations. Listen here: https://lnkd.in/eyx3xzub

Every year, the world emits a staggering 50 gigatonnes of greenhouse gases. Of this, how much carbon can nature-based solutions realistically remove? Of late, Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology has been hailed as a cutting-edge solution for removing atmospheric carbon. But is it the most feasible way ahead? Challenges such as high energy demand and the need for large-scale infrastructure limit its scalability as of today. On the other hand, we have another powerful option: nature-based solutions. As the Earth’s natural DAC system, they excel at sequestering carbon while protecting biodiversity and supporting ecosystems essential for life. Together, nature-based solutions have the capacity to remove or avoid 4.5–5.75Gt annually by 2030 and  10–12Gt every year by 2050. But to unlock this potential, we must plan ahead and act now. A combination of data-driven technology, rigorous planning, and on-ground monitoring are crucial for identifying the right lands and maximising their environmental impact. Explore our article to find out how we can fully unlock the carbon removal potential of nature-based solutions. • Arbonics has officially launched Impact Forestry in Latvia! As the fifth most forested country in Europe, Latvia offers a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on climate change and carbon sequestration. However, in recent decades, certain trends have led to a decline in net carbon removals from the country’s forests, such as: - Increased forest harvesting - Higher mortality rates and reduced biomass growth - Ineffective compensation mechanisms that don’t incentivise planet-friendly behaviour By bringing Impact Forestry to Latvia, we aim to effectively tackle these challenges. Offering Impact Forestry alongside Afforestation to Latvian landowners will allow them to generate steady forest income and diversify their portfolios while maximising their land’s carbon removal potential. Latvian landowners have the potential to become leaders in the New Forest Economy and contribute to the fight against climate change. We are here to support them on this journey. • Our team had the privilege of visiting former President Toomas_Hendrik Ilves’ family farm in Southern Estonia, a place steeped in history that holds a deep connection to the land. During our rainy tour, we explored the farm’s rich history and toured ‘European park’, featuring trees planted by over 20 heads of state, as well as renowned figures such as composer Arvo Pärt and even one of our investors Rainer Sternfeld. We worked with the former President Ilves to identify areas with the most potential for carbon sequestration through Afforestation as well as what areas are best for Impact Forestry. We also had time to record a conversation between him and Arbonics co-founder and CEO Kristjan Lepik, which is coming out soon. Stay tuned! They’ll be discussing his experience as a landowner, the crucial role Impact Forestry can play in addressing climate change, and how the EU can lead these efforts.

  • Removing carbon and restoring our planet’s ecosystems are some of our most important challenges today. We believe the key to solving them lies in combining scientific expertise, data-driven technology and realigned incentives for those who care for our lands. For too long, European landowners have had limited options to earn income, often relying on selling land or cutting down forests. Our projects offer a better path—helping them earn a steady forest income through carbon sequestration, while closely monitoring their land’s ecological impact. The result? Each carbon credit represents measurable carbon removal and environmental restoration, backed by data. • Today, many types of carbon credits available fall short of the rigorous quality standards required to have a measurable impact on carbon balance and biodiversity.  However, abandoning the carbon market entirely would be a reductive approach to a complex issue.  The real solution (and opportunity) is in addressing these gaps head-on, ensuring stronger accountability, and strengthening transparency with innovation and concrete action. Here’s the reality: reaching Net-Zero net-zero involves managing unavoidable emissions from even the greenest of activities, such as manufacturing solar panels and EVs.  This is where a transparent, accountable voluntary carbon market has a crucial role to play.  By pushing for rigorous standards and measurable deliverables, we can truly transform the current system into a powerful tool for real climate action.  #naturebasedsolutions #CDR #carbonremoval #forestry #carboncredits #newforesteconomy #carboncapture #forests #voluntarycarbonmarket #forestcarbon
