A hot topic this week is Estonia’s synchronization with the continental European electricity grid. 🔌⚡️ This milestone not only strengthens our energy independence but also brings new responsibilities – most notably, the need to ensure our electricity system can be balanced at any moment. This means that alongside ramping up renewable energy production, we must place greater emphasis on energy storage solutions. 🔋 The opportunities unlocked by this new grid connection – and whether Estonia is prepared to seize them – were explored in our most recent Cleantech episode. Hear from Karlis Goldstein, Head of Renewable Energy at Kliimaministeerium / Ministry of Climate of Estonia, and Adam Erki Enok, Energy Storage Project Manager at Sunly. 🎧 Listen on Spotify in Estonian – https://lnkd.in/dEQKYjCy 🎙️ Hosted by Mart Valner 🙌🏼 Supported by Estonian Cleantech Association, Sunly, and KIK (Environmental Investment Centre) *** With 50+ other Cleantech episodes available, there’s plenty to explore! Animal fats and palm oil are a thing of the past. ❌ Last week, we spent a morning at ÄIO to hear how their talented team is revolutionising the production of fats and oils. We were warmly welcomed by Petri-Jaan Lahtvee, Mariane Barrier, and Kristi Lember, who walked us through the science behind their work and shared both wins and challenges in the innovative food industry. 👩🔬 ÄIO is developing sustainable substitutes to animal fats, coconut oil, and palm oil by harnessing fermentation and utilising low-value by-products from various industries.

There really is no better way to showcase Estonia's innovative spirit than seeing it firsthand at one of the biggest startup and tech events in the country. 👀 At the end of January, we welcomed our partners from Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) and 5 Kenyan cleantech startups to Estonia for sTARTUp Day. On festival Day 2, our startup guests (Eco Nasi, Wable Maji Safi Solutions , CHAJI, ProteinMaster Bsf Nairobi kenya, and Caino Africa) got the chance to present their solutions to investors, industry leaders, and other festival visitors on the pitching stage. 🎤 🙏 A special thank you to Inga Kõue (Startup Estonia), Karl-Kaspar Kottisse and Toomas Kresla (Solarstone), José Efraín Pompa Barrera (eAgronom), and Pille-Riin Meerits and Pirko Konsa (Sparkup Tartu Science Park) for meeting and sharing your startup experience with our guests during their stay. 🎉 This visit put a successful end to our already second Estonia-Kenya collaboration project. Our goal is to build a stronger network among Estonia and Kenya's cleantech ecosystem members to support knowledge-sharing and market expansion both ways. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/deGiWANQ The project is supported by Estonian Centre for International Development (ESTDEV). #FromThePeopleOfEstonia

Today: decoupling from the Russian energy system Tomorrow: coupling with the Continental Europe Frequency Area Next: further strengthening the security of our critical energy infrastructure and transiting to 100% clean and locally produced power with the help of European clean technologies
Today marks a historic milestone for Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania as they have successfully decoupled from the Russian-controlled BRELL power grid, ushering in a new era of energy independence. This strategic move not only enhances the Baltic states' energy security but also solidifies their integration into the European energy system. The journey to this achievement has been years in the making. Following Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, the Baltic nations accelerated efforts to reduce reliance on Russian energy. Significant investments were made in infrastructure upgrades and the development of alternative energy sources, culminating in today's successful decoupling from the BRELL network. Looking ahead, the Baltic states are poised to synchronize with the European Union's power grid, further strengthening regional energy cooperation. This integration is expected to enhance grid stability, promote renewable energy initiatives, and foster economic growth across the region. As we celebrate this pivotal moment, it's essential to recognize the collaborative efforts that have made it possible. The commitment to energy independence not only safeguards the sovereignty of the Baltic nations but also sets a precedent for other regions striving for self-sufficiency in their energy sectors. The Baltic states have demonstrated that through determination and strategic planning, it's possible to overcome historical dependencies and chart a new course for a sustainable and secure energy future. Coming back from sTARTUp Day with a wealth of new ideas and connections. Last week was a busy one for our team. Here's a recap of everything we got up to during the festival week. ⬇️ ⚡️ Day 0: We co-organised an official side-event with Beamline Accelerator and Tenity. The event focused on why Estonia is the ideal place to grow a startup, so we invited 2 foreign founders—Nikhita Bhagwat from Trashify Tech and Fabio Nicoló from Renewcast—to share their experiences on stage. ⚡️ Day 1: We explored the venue, engaged in matchmaking, and soaked up the festival buzz. A major topic of discussion on and off stage was the growing opportunities in defence. Cleantech has immense potential to strengthen Europe’s resilience and security by decentralising and diversifying energy and raw material sources, as well as optimising energy demand in buildings and industry. ⚡️ Day 2: We hosted a pitching event at the venue as part of our Estonia-Kenya collaboration project "Green Bridges". 5 Kenyan cleantech companies showcased their innovative solutions in clean energy and water, sustainable food, and innovative materials. As Europe takes new steps to strengthen its competitiveness in an era of uncertainty, one comforting thought from the festival stayed with us: change is good—it challenges us to adapt, evolve, and refine our focus. 🧘

📨 OPEN LETTER: FOR AN AMBITIOUS CLEAN(TECH) INDUSTRIAL DEAL 📨 Today Cleantech for Baltics joins over 100 leading cleantech innovators and investors from across Europe in an open letter calling on the European Commission to deliver an ambitious Clean Industrial Deal. The letter, addressed to Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen and relevant Commissioners, emphasizes the urgent need for action in 2025 to address Europe’s geopolitical challenges, energy costs, and intensifying global competition. To succeed on these fronts, the Clean Industrial Deal must send two clear market signals: 📈 Boost demand for cleantech: help industries become more competitive by adopting state-of-the-art cleantech, establishing lead markets, integrate innovation into public procurement, maintaining the ambition of the #ETS and #CBAM, and fostering fair trade policies. 💶 Unlock private capital through public de-risking mechanisms: Expand EU funding and guarantees to mobilize Europe’s €38 trillion in private capital, scaling cleantech manufacturing while ensuring fiscal efficiency. This is a make-or-break moment for Europe’s industrial future. With the right mix of policies and incentives, the Clean Industrial Deal can establish a compelling business case for clean technologies, drive industrial transitions, and pave the way for a prosperous and sustainable future for European citizens. 📄 Read the full open letter and join us in shaping Europe’s clean industrial future: https://lnkd.in/e_8zcV3P Cleantech for Europe, Cleantech for France, Cleantech for Nordics, Cleantech for Iberia, Cleantech for Italy, Tech for Net Zero, Skeleton Technologies, Beamline Accelerator
