Developing a standard solution for the European unmanned ground system

About us

The mutual goal for the European nations joined in the PESCO project „integrated Unmanned Ground Systems“ (iUGS) and the EDIDP project „integrated Modular Unmanned Ground Systems“ (iMUGS) is to develop a modular and scalable architecture of unmanned ground systems. This site will cover the results and developments of both mentioned projects and any other relevant projects conducted under the same concept in the future. The PESCO iUGS project is coordinated by Estonia and involves Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Poland and Spain. Project aims at the development of a modular UGS architecture capable of carrying different payloads and sensors. Given its potential, the project received funds under the EDIDP umbrella with a financial contribution of 30.6 million euro – the iMUGS project. iMUGS is in the overall following the same goal, but the detailed objectives and technical solutions for the European standardized unmanned ground system were agreed by seven of the previously mentioned nations: Belgium, Spain, Latvia, France, Germany, Finland and Estonia as the coordinator. The project is structured along 7 sub-projects that all cover studies, design, prototyping, testing and technical coordination: 1. System Integration 2. Autonomous Functions 3. Cyber Security 4. Communication 5. Swarming 6. Command, Control and Interoperability 7. Manned-Unmanned Teaming The industry consortium, led by Milrem Robotics, comprises some of the best in class European players in their respective fields: SAFRAN Electronics & Defense SAS, GT Cyber Technologies OÜ, Bittium Wireless Oy, Insta DefSec Oy, GMV Aerospace and Defence SAU, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co KG, Diehl Defence GmbH & Co KG, Nexter Systems SA, Latvijas Mobilais Telefons SIA, (Un)Manned NV, Ecole Royale Militaire – Koninkljike Militaire School and dotOcean NV.

📢 iMUGS2 application submitted 📢 The consortium that successfully delivered the groundbreaking #iMUGS (Integrated Modular Unmanned Ground System) project in 2023 has submitted the iMUGS2 proposal, together with new consortium members, in response to the European Defence Fund’s (#EDF) call to develop next-generation Multipurpose Unmanned Ground Systems (#UGS). Building on the success of iMUGS, the production-capable Consortium is set to revolutionise European military capabilities, enhance battlefield effectiveness and enable the fielding of European unmanned ground systems. 💡 iMUGS2 has three main outcomes. ✔ First, it aims to develop, validate and demonstrate cost-effective, combat-ready UGSs that support dismounted troops at various operational levels and provide practical value in different operations. ✔ Second, the project will develop operational concepts demonstrating how UGS and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) can enhance infantry battalion and cross-domain operations capabilities. ✔ Third, the project will enhance the modular and open architecture and Through Life Capability Management (TLCM) framework that enables efficient integration of autonomous functionalities with legacy and new systems across unmanned and optionally manned ground platforms, including conversion of manned vehicles. The iMUGS2 consortium has expanded to include 29 partners from 15 European Union member states and associated countries, including all initial project partners. The Consortium consists of the following entities: AVL, Bittium, Czech Technical University in Prague, Cybernetica, Delft Dynamics B.V., Diehl Defence, dotOcean, Elettronica FM, Escribano Mechanical and Engineering, FN Herstal, GMV, Huta Stalowa Wola S.A./HSW S.A., @Insta Advance, Integrated Systems Development Corp., John Cockerill, KNDS France, KNDS Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, Latvijas Mobilais Telefons SIA, Łukasiewicz - PIAP, Milrem Robotics (project coordinator), Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research, Forsvarets forskningsinstitutt - FFI, Royal Military Academy, Belgium, Safran, Secura, Svensk Konstruktionstjänst, Systecon Konsult, Talgen Cybersecurity. Milrem Robotics, Europe’s leading robotics and autonomous systems developer, has successfully concluded its participation in the US Army Expeditionary Warrior Experiment (AEWE). In cooperation and partnership with the Dutch Ministry of Defence and at the invitation of the Dutch Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) unit it allowed Milrem Robotics to present the capabilities of weaponized THeMIS Combat Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV). “AEWE showcased the advanced stage of the THeMIS UGV, highlighting its operational readiness and allowing us to collect crucial user feedback on the system and concepts,” stated Patrick Shepherd, Milrem Robotics’ Chief Sales Officer. Equipped with Milrem’s Intelligent Functions Kits (MIFIK) the UGVs also successfully partook in autonomous functions experiments on various terrain and environments. “Integrated with intelligent functions, third party payloads such as weapon systems, route clearance or casualty evacuation systems, the THeMIS is now operational globally,” Shepherd added. The last two systems are actively supporting combat efforts in Ukraine. Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine – Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine

Large-scale production of robotics has started in Ukraine. BRAVE1 tested 50+ ground-based robot systems Under testing were different types of drones: turrets and kamikaze platforms that destroy Russian positions and equipment, mining & demining, machines for evacuation of the wounded and for transportation of ammunition to positions. Such testings will accelerate the improvement of products, bringing them closer to codification and further purchase by the state. Robots have shown successful results at the testground and will be at the frontline just in a few months — hundreds of different platforms will be purchased through UNITED24. We continue to develop innovations so that the Defense Forces can purchase them. The main goal of ground robots is to minimize human participation on the battlefield. This will save life and health of Ukrainian soldiers. Ground robotic systems will become the next game changer in this war, the same as drones. This is an asymmetrical response to the enemy's manpower & ammunition superiority. 140+ robotic systems are registered on the Brave1 platform, 96 of them have passed military testing and 14 products are already been codified according to NATO standards. Some of these robots are already working at the front, for example, the ShaBlya turret. Brave1 defense tech cluster is doing everything to scale the production of robots, and the government is beginning to purchase them en masse. The same path that we have passed with drones is also being followed with robotic platforms. The global plan is to ensure that all products registered on Brave1 undergo codification, receive contracts and serve at the frontline.

  • Great to see more and more development projects to enhance the use of #unmannedsystems. Many of these similar systems are widely in use as prototypes in Ukraine, but we do need a comprehensive approach to take the full advantage of the technologies in Europe. Great work COMMANDS team, looking forward to the results of the project. #innovation #development
