Helping companies demonstrate EU RED II compliance 🤝📑 In a significant move towards PEFC providing companies with a tool to demonstrate their compliance with the #REDII sustainability and greenhouse gas saving criteria across the EU, the PEFC RED II standards were approved by the PEFC General Assembly yesterday. ✔️ These new standards will enable PEFC chain of custody certified organisations seeking RED II compliance to obtain a PEFC RED II certificate and use the PEFC certification scheme to demonstrate that the forest biomass they use meets the relevant RED II sustainability criteria. Organisations that are not yet PEFC chain of custody certified and wish to use the PEFC RED II tool as evidence to meet their RED II obligations, will need to obtain a PEFC chain of custody certificate and a PEFC RED II certificate at the same time. Last week, the Estonian Food Industry Association held a sustainable packaging conference, and we were there with PEFC-certified Metsä Group. Marjatta Punkka from Metsä Food Packaging spoke on the importance of sustainable packaging and developments in wood-based packaging. Together, it was acknowledged that, unfortunately, there are no quick solutions yet. However, the private sector is collaborating with researchers to advance wood as a key renewable raw material into food and beverage packaging, aiming to replace plastic and glass. The photos are by photographer Erlend Štaub. Watch the conference replay 👉 https://lnkd.in/dQajstPd

We were in the Estonian forest with Maaleht and PEFC Italy’s Secretary General Antonio Brunori! More specifically, in the Tamsalu forest in Lääne-Viru. Together, we visited a PEFC-certified RMK forest. Specifically, in collaboration with RMK, we established demonstration areas based on the PEFC forest management standard, which serve as a good example of how to manage forests according to the current standard. Antonio Brunori will be visiting Estonia until the end of the week, leading discussions on ecosystem services with industry experts. On October 17, Antonio Brunori will speak at the Wood Industry Business Plan 2025 conference in Tartu, organized by Äripäev.
