I am thrilled to join the inauguration of the SWEETWOODS #biorefinery. This first-of-its-kind plant is turning hardwood waste into high-value compounds, showcasing the power of the #circular #bioeconomy. Despite many external challenges, Fibenol‘s and its partners' dedication delivered a highly efficient industrial plant with reduced environmental impact. It’s a proud moment for the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) to see such a green cathedral come to life in #Imavere, #Estonia. The SWEETWOODS project is more than a biorefinery; it’s a catalyst for industry and innovation, creating jobs and propelling the regional economy. It stands as a testament to the vision of the European Commission , the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) , and the vibrant community driving the #biobased sector. I am very proud of the SWEETWOODS achievements. Replication of successful large scale industrial technologies is one of the keys to fully deploy the #bioeconomy in Europe. The Latvian government - through Invest in Latvia - signed an MoU with Fibenol setting the basis for a 600 mil € investment in the bioeconomy.   Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) JU funded 16 flagship biorefineries in Europe supporting companies, research centres, universities and Smes in realising industrial scale plants. Many of these facilities will be fully operational over the next months.   Replicability has been one of the key aspects we asked our beneficiaries to focus on. This is fundamental to attract investment in Europe, valorise local value chains and strengthen European strategic autonomy.    I am glad to see that last week the Latvian government signed a MoU with Fibenol to replicate the technology developed in CBE JU SWEETWOODS project. What went on during the #EUBioeconomy Changemakers Festival's first day? Here are some highlights: 🔵 Joanna Drake, Deputy Director General of EU Science, Research and Innovation, emphasised the crucial role of the public-private partnership CBE JU as a successful example of instrument deploying the bioeconomy. 🟢 Katrin Jõgi, Sustainability Manager at Fibenol & SWEETWOODS, emphasised the crucial role of CBE JU financial support, stressing that the EU must mitigate investment risks and foster innovation. 🟠 John Bell, Director for Healthy Planet of EU Science, Research and Innovation, pointed at 'scaling up and going local at the same time' as the goal for the #biobased sector. 🔵Rob Beekers, Chair of CBE JU Governing Board and Chair of Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) Board of Directors, highlighted that mindsets need to converge to enable fair competition between bio-based solutions and current alternatives.
