UP Catalyst sets a new industry standard for low-emission, high purity carbon nanotubes and battery-grade graphite! UP Catalyst CNTs and Graphite produced at large scale have a near-zero carbon footprint: • 0.7 tons of CO₂-eq/ton per ton of #CNTs • 0.07 tons of CO₂-eq/ton for battery-grade #graphite "The exceptionally low carbon footprint is achieved due to two main factors. First, the process consumes significantly less #energy compared to conventional production methods. Second, it utilises #CO₂ emissions as feedstock instead of fossil resources. This approach allows industrial emitters to generate a new revenue stream for their CO₂ emissions while also providing local manufacturers with sustainable, fossil-free raw materials which are #price-competitive with Chinese carbon materials,” says Gary Urb, PhD, CEO of UP Catalyst. Conventional graphite and CNT production is highly polluting. The carbon footprint of conventionally produced fossil-based graphite and CNTs is substantial. According to the benchmark, synthetic graphite has a carbon footprint of over 25 kg of CO₂-eq/kg, while CNTs have a footprint of approximately 170 kg CO₂-eq/kg. The cradle-to-gate LCA was conducted by RISE Research Institutes of Sweden and critically reviewed by Bureau Veritas Group Poland and Estonia offices. We're proud to share our project: "CO2-negative concrete as a sustainable and scalable building material" 🌱🏗️ This initiative, funded by the EEA and Norway Grants "Green ICT" programme, is being implemented in collaboration with our Norwegian partner, Cemonite AS (formerly known as SafeRock). Together, we’re working on innovative solutions to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability in the concrete and construction industry. In the video, Dr. Heidi Lees, our Senior Researcher, provides insights into the project’s goals and the journey so far. Her expertise highlights the potential of this groundbreaking technology to transform the way we build. UP Catalyst is mentioned as one of the novel synthetic graphite production methods in "Critical Raw Material Supply-Side Innovation Roadmap for the EU Energy Transition" report from Systemiq Ltd., supported by Breakthrough Energy and the Energy Transitions Commission with data and expert input from Minviro and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. 💡 Key insights about graphite from the 70-page report. 🇨🇳 🇪🇺 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: • China has almost 70% of global market share for graphite. • The EU has virtually no existing domestic capacity for graphite. • By 2035, graphite demand forecast to exceed supply from existing and new announced mines by 80%. • Future price risk from existing low-cost supply (especially from China). #𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: (includes graphite from #CO₂ emissions, #biographite, methane pyrolysis, lengthwise graphitization and others). • Emissions < 3kg CO₂-eq/kg for novel synthetic production routes - over 90% emissions reduction compared to conventional methods. • Novel Synthetic Graphite Production could supply ~40% of EU graphite demand by 2035. • Novel synthetic graphite production are estimated to be only 10– 20% costlier than current production methods, with minimal impact on final battery costs. 🏭 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: • If no action is taken to reduce the environmental impacts of critical raw materials mining and refining, total global emissions from the sector could double to reach ~1 Gt CO₂- eq by 2035. • Synthetic Graphite emissions estimated between 20 and 50 kg CO₂-eq/kg • Natural graphite emissions estimated between 10 and 15 kg CO₂-eq/kg. Additionally, use of hydrofluoric acid creates risk of groundwater contamination and requires strict handling protocols. Many natural graphite mines are located in regions with medium water stress. UP Catalyst Wins UpLink - World Economic Forum's Prestigious Carbon Capture & Utilisation Challenge! This is a huge recognition validating UP Catalyst's CO₂ #utilisation technology as one of the best in the world 🥇. The challenge evaluated 315 submissions from across the globe 🌏 to find those breakthrough innovators who can reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide levels through smart solutions 🚀. Gary Urb, PhD mentioned: "the win reaffirms that lowering CO₂ levels isn't just about storing it underground; it unlocks the potential of using CO₂ as a valuable feedstock for creating high-impact products." Sebastian Pohlmann, who represented us in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and also accepted the award on behalf of UP Catalyst, highlighted: "The most valuable learning was discovering the abundance of 98%-pure CO₂ already available from the petrochemical industry—a game-changer for scalable solutions.🚀" UP Catalyst uses 3.7 tons of 98%-purity CO₂ in its electrolysis process for every ton of produced advanced carbon material. Sebastian also toured the world’s largest #CCU facility that opened in 2015 at United, a SABIC affiliate. It uses proprietary technology to capture 500,000 metric tons (MT) of CO₂ per year from the production of ethylene glycol that would otherwise be emitted into the atmosphere, converting it into feedstock for industrial processes. To put things in perspective, over 11 million trees would need to be planted to capture the equivalent amount. Read more from the Arab News: https://lnkd.in/g97MVSpX This recognition is a huge milestone for UP Catalyst and it provides an incredible platform to expand our impact and forge new collaborations within the global energy and #rawmaterials sectors.

Yesterday, we had the profound honour of being at the Baltic Sustainability Awards, where we celebrated not just one but three nominations and proudly took home two awards in Climate Innovations and Industrial Symbiosis. 🏆🏆 Our mission at UP Catalyst has always been to lead the world toward sustainable carbon solutions. It’s not just about creating a sustainable future for us but for the generations yet to come. 🌱 A message from one of the jurors, Helen Sooväli-Sepping, deeply resonated with us: We need to voice and communicate about sustainability to all! Her words remind us why we do what we do—not just innovating but sharing, educating, and inspiring action. To the expert jurors, the team at BSA, and visionaries like Jana Budkovskaja and many others—thank you. Your support fuels us to keep striving, innovating, and dreaming of a greener world. This isn’t just a win for UP Catalyst. It’s a win for every step toward a brighter, more sustainable tomorrow, for which we all must work together. 💚✨ #Sustainability #CleanEnergy #ClimateAction #Innovation #UPCatalyst #BalticSustainabilityAwards
