WAT-DEV Project tailors a workshop for farmers from 3 governorates! As part of the project activities and in collaboration with the faculty of Engineering at Heliopolis University, the project team organized a successful workshop at SEKEM Group's Farm, titled “Best Practices & Innovation” for project farmers, beneficiaries and stakeholders. Over the course of 2 days, the workshop’s 42 participants from Sharkia, Ismailia and Qalyubia, were trained on the Best Management Practices - BMPs for land, crop & water, as well as sustainable agriculture concept as a solution for the climate change threats in Egypt. During the workshop, the participants had field visits to multiple locations at Sekem Farm where they learned firsthand about the innovative sustainable agricultural practices used. There were also discussions and talks from experts & specialists in dairy products management, sustainable & organic agriculture, and circular economy fields. The farmers’ take-outs from the workshop and action plan included: 👉 Switching to organic fertilizers in their farms 👉 Practicing tree-loading to reduce carbon emissions 👉 Water Users Associations - WUAs will help farmers integrate modern irrigation techniques WAT-DEV Project is considered supportive of Heliopolis University’s efforts and contributes to achieving Sekem Vision for 2057, which is helping 7 million Egyptian farmers transition from traditional to organic agriculture. So far, our efforts have helped 17,000 farmers transition to organic agriculture, with a goal of 40,000 farmers by 2025 and 250,000 farmers by 2030. Noteworthy, the WAT-DEV Project goal is to expand the implementation of best management practices and select agricultural innovations among local rural communities in Egypt, Sudan, Kenya and Ethiopia. Stay tuned for more updates from WAT-DEV Project.

Future Economy Forum in the Blue Zone at COP16Riyadh leading the session "Regenerative Agriculture and Nature-based, Science-backed Innovation: Empowering Farmers as Stewards." Covered for the International Institute for Sustainable Development by @Delia Paul. Side event co-hosted with NOW Partners Foundation, EoL (Economy of Love ) Global, Natural Capitalism Solutions, and SEKEM Group. ➡️ Speakers: Walter Link, President and Founder of NOW, Co-Founder of Economy of Love Global (moderator) Professor Hunter Lovins, President and Founder of Natural Capitalism Solutions , Author of 19 books, Professor at Fordham University Merijn Dols@, Co-Founder of the Future Economy Forum, former Head of Global Innovation and Circularity at Danone Professor Ahmed Elshazly, CEO of Heliopolis University , SEKEM Group Laura Santucci, former Chief of Staff UN World Food Programme WFP and President Obama's White House political operations. ➡️ Key Insights: “Regenerative agriculture combines traditional and new practices to create benefits for people and nature, resulting in increased yields, more nutritious produce, higher household incomes, and increased biodiversity. Speakers and participants at this event cited examples from India and Egypt to illustrate the benefits to farmers: first, from applying regenerative principles; and second, from sale of carbon credits from soil carbon sequestration.” Walter Link: “Desertification occurs not only over large land areas, but also on parts of farmland that are no longer productive, because of the over-use of chemicals. This can be reversed using combinations of traditional methods with new innovations” Hunter Lovins: “Peer-reviewed scientific research shows livestock grazing increases mycorrhizal fungi and promotes soil carbon—a process that is “driving climate change back at a profit”—whereas chemical-based agriculture poisons the fungi and leads to decline in the nutritional value of crops.“ Laura Santucci: “Change happens, not only because of data and evidence, but because science and storytelling together can win over the hearts and minds of policymakers.“ ➡️ Read the full piece: https://lnkd.in/gwC_tEnS Photo by IISD/ENB | Angeles Estrada Vigil
