El pasado 2 de octubre celebramos la inauguración de una de las primeras biorrefinerías de Europa, ubicada en nuestro Centro de Innovación Alfonso Maíllo (CIAM). Esta innovadora instalación forma parte del proyecto CIRCULAR BIOCARBON, un esfuerzo conjunto de Urbaser y un consorcio de otras 10 entidades en colaboración con el Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza, y financiado por el programa Horizonte 2020 de la Unión Europea. A través de este proyecto, los lodos de depuradoras y los residuos orgánicos recogidos selectivamente serán transformados en bioproductos de alto valor, impulsando un futuro basado en la economía circular. Esta biorrefinería ejemplifica nuestro compromiso en Urbaser por liderar la innovación y la sostenibilidad en el tratamiento de residuos. Earlier this month, Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza opened Europe's first flaghsip urban biorefinery, in the context of the EU-funded CIRCULAR BIOCARBON project. Mayor of Zaragoza Natalia Chueca noted that the biorefinery will allow Zaragoza to turn solid waste and sewadge sludge into end products, highlighting that this will create social, environmental and economic benefits for the city and the region. https://lnkd.in/ebmTagPR As one of the cities selected to participate in NetZeroCitiesEU, the EU's mission that has selected 112 European cities to reach climate-neutrality by 2030, Zaragoza is commited to become a pioneering sustainable city in Europe. As the mayor mentioned, the circular economy is key to these efforts. Through projects such as CIRCULAR BIOCARBON and REDOL EU Project, the city becomes "a reference in new technologies aimed at transforming waste." https://lnkd.in/e8f7nxRS

Last week was an important milestone for CIRCULAR BIOCARBON. The consortium, coordinated by Urbaser, came together in Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza for the inauguration of its flagship biorefinery, the first of its kind in Europe. The biorefinery will transfrom organic urban solid waste into high value added products, such as biopolymers, biofertilisers and green graphene. It will treat more than 300 million tonnes of waste generated by over 1 million people. In the process, it will create major sustainable, social and economic benefits for the region. The biorefinery is a unique model implemented in two different locations. Project partner Socamex S.A. presented CIRCULAR BIOCARBON at two events of the 2024 AEAS Congress. On 6 June it was part of a round table on innovation in the water sector, while on 7 June the project was presented in the 15-minute talk "Study about the emerging pollutants present in sewage sludge". Last week, the CIRCULAR BIOCARBON consortium met for the first time in person! Thanks to NOVAMONT which hosted us in its impressive headquarters in Novara, we had a highly productive General Assembly discussing the challenges and opportunities of valorising bio-waste. We are now ready for the next steps and are looking forward to opening the biorefineries in Sesto San Giovanni and Zaragoza!
