At HBX Group, we believe in creating a sustainable future by transforming tourism into a force for good and contributing to the economic and social development of communities worldwide. Outlined in our Sustainability Report earlier this year was one of our key ESG initiatives, our Think Big project that aims to empower rural communities to create sustainable micro-destinations while preserving their cultural and natural heritage.
Back in January, we launched the pilot project in Quintana Roo, Mexico, where a team of HBX Group volunteers worked with Mayan cooperatives to enhance tourism products, improve digitalisation, and implement sustainability criteria.
We are delighted to share the success of the second edition of Think Big, where alongside our Head of ESG, Carlota Galván Bisbal, 11 HBX Group volunteers returned to Quintana Roo recently to continue this meaningful work. Collaborating with the local NGO, Amigos de Sian Ka'an, they built upon the foundation laid by the first group, performing hands-on tasks to improve the infrastructure and resources of key locations across the region.
Here are some highlights from the second trip shared by the team:
Punta Allen 🎣
Located in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, this fishing community is a hub for sustainable lobster fishing and ecotourism. Our team renovated a local restaurant, painted ethical signage, taught English phrases to boat captains, and completed a beach clean-up, collecting 380kg of rubbish in just 1.5 hours!
Tihosuco 🏛️
This historic village, known for its colonial architecture and cultural significance, welcomed our volunteers as they worked with U'Belilek organisation. Tasks included painting, repairing, and creating signage to enhance the community's tourism infrastructure.
Kichpam Ka'ax Ecotourism Centre 🌿
Located in the Mayan jungle, this centre showcases the sustainable living and cultural identity of the Mayan community. Volunteers created new signage, sanded and varnished furniture, restored outdoor facilities, and brought new life to existing artwork.
All volunteers shared that it was an incredibly impactful experience, providing firsthand insights into sustainable tourism and the power of community collaboration. We are proud to work alongside these incredible communities and partners to make a difference. #ThinkBig #HBXGroup
