Last night, the BritishSpanish Society hosted an exclusive event at the Meliá hotel princesa, bringing together business leaders, association representatives, and key figures to discuss business growth in Spain and its regional diversity. The SIBN Spanish Irish Business Network was delighted to support this event in highlighting Spain’s entrepreneurial spirit within the British & Irish markets. Titled "Celebrating Spain’s Regional Business Diversity," the event featured insightful talks by: - José María de Santiago, President of Zamora Company founders of the emblematic #licor43, owners of renowned wines #RamonyBilbao & #MartinMiller and - juan miguel perez ilzarbe former International Director of #PuertodeIndias gin. Both speakers shared their experiences and lessons from their careers. They reflected on the importance of strategy, adaptability, the role of both luck (and bad luck), & the challenges of driving growth. The event also highlighted how the positives and challenges of family-owned businesses in Spain, post war and how they have successfully navigated generational changes to achieve shared goals and become global benchmarks today. Hosted & moderated by Brian James Douglas & Jonathan Stordy, board advisor to Zamora Company, the event concluded with a lively Q&A session and networking over drinks and nibbles. Despite the gusty afternoon showers, the energy was high yesterday at #RITD Madrid2024, as 53 dedicated runners and walkers took to Retiro Park at 20:00 to tackle the 5K and 10K courses in the darkness. A huge congratulations to all our participants! Special mentions go to Adrian Kildea from Dublin, David Fitzgerald from Brisbane, and our finance director, Brendan Hayes, CAIA from Wexford, along with Diana Villagrán Melo from Ecuador (I think?), for being the first men and woman completing the 10K. More applause to Teresa Lazpita from Pamplona, the first woman to cross the 5K finish line! 👏 SIBN is proud to champion Mark Pollock's Run In The Dark event in Spain, and together, we raised over €1,500 last night for #CollaborativeCures. Mark recently shared how, thanks to ongoing fundraising and #AI-driven breakthroughs, bionic limbs for those with paralysis are closer to becoming reality for all —a powerful reminder of the future we’re all helping to shape. A heartfelt thank you to our amazing #SIBN team who made it all possible: Carolyn, Monica, Catalina, Harry, Emma, Brendan, and Mairi. And thank you to everyone who joined us - including our ever supportive Irish Ambassador to Spain, frank smyth - both for the run and for the well-deserved gathering afterward at the James Joyce Irish Pub Madrid. An Evening with Denis Rafter: The Art of Irish Storytelling On October 28th at 7pm, the stunning Art Nouveau building of SGAE (Sociedad General de Autores y Escritores) at C/ Fernando VI, 4, Madrid, will host acclaimed actor and director Denis Rafter for an inspiring evening titled El arte de la literatura oral de Irlanda. In this talk, Rafter will explore how Ireland’s rich storytelling tradition has shaped his work as an actor, director, and playwright. From his unique approach to staging the works of Sophocles, Shakespeare, Cervantes, and Wilde to his creative process in writing plays on Santa Teresa, Nebrija, and the Spanish War of Independence, Rafter will share insights and even read excerpts from his work. This event is free and open to all lovers of storytelling and the power of theater.
