UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF

Des del CATALYSE Project, tenim la sort de col·laborar amb una xarxa de professionals compromesos amb la mitigació del canvi climàtic des del seu sector, el sistema de salut de Catalunya. El 27 de novembre i ahir, 11 de desembre, vam comptar amb la participació d'una trentena de professionals per a la co-creació d'accions de mitigació adaptades al sistema de salut català. Durant les dues sessions, els participants van compartir les seves experiències i van dur a terme una priorització i una anàlisi de factibilitat de cadascuna de les 50 accions de mitigació proposades. L'objectiu: avançar cap a un sistema de salut amb un menor impacte ambiental des d´una visió de salut planetària. Aquest procés de consulta forma part de la tasca que desenvolupem des de l'UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF dins el marc del CATALYSE Project, liderat pel Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal). Els resultats d'aquest procés contribueixen, juntament amb la petjada de carboni del sistema de salut, al desenvolupament d'escenaris de mitigació i a la creació de guies actualitzades aplicades al sistema de salut català. On 27 November and yesterday, 11 December, we counted with thirty professionals for the co-creation of mitigation actions tailored to the Catalan healthcare system. During both sessions, participants shared their experiences and carried out a prioritization and feasibility analysis of each of the 50 proposed mitigation actions. The goal: to move towards a low-carbon healthcare system from a planetary health perspective. This consultation process is part of the work we are developing from the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF, in the framework of the CATALYSE Project led by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal). The results of this process, together with the carbon footprint of the healthcare system, contribute to the development of mitigation scenarios and the creation of updated guidelines applied to the Catalan healthcare system.

COP29 Azerbaijan, the United Nations Conference of the Parties held in Baku between November 11th and 22nd, marked a major milestone in global climate action, particularly in climate finance. The UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change at ESCI-UPF researcher, Sahar Azarkamand, PhD., shares the foremost agreements reached at the Conference, highlighting the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance (NCQG) and the rules established to authorize and track carbon credit trading. #COP29 #ClimateChange

The UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change at ESCI-UPF participates in the KijaniBox-eu project, officially launched last month in Nairobi, Kenya, which aims to accelerate Africa’s green transition. The primary objective of the project is to minimize food losses, mitigate sanitary risks, and promote energy access for small businesses. The project will run for four years, with the ESCI-UPF team leading critical tasks related to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Circularity Assessment, Life Cycle Costing, and Socioeconomic Assessment. #LCA #WasteManagement #Research

Last month, Dr Stephen Minas, professor at Peking University, gave an online conference on climate change for the students of the Master of Science in Sustainability Management that the UPF Barcelona School of Management offers jointly with ESCI-UPF. The master's professor and researcher at UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF, Ilija Sazdovski, summarizes the main insights of the lecture, especially those regarding the COP29 Azerbaijan agenda. #MScSUS #ClimateChange #COP

ECODES (Fundación Ecología y Desarrollo), amb la seva iniciativa Comunidad #PorElClima, i la Càtedra UNESCO en Cicle de Vida i Canvi Climàtic d'ESCI-UPF han establert un acord de col·laboració en el marc de CATALYSE Project, finançat per la Comissió Europea i coordinat per Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal). The UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change at ESCI-UPF has published a paper in the Sustainable Production and Consumption journal about a new nutritional quality model to evaluate the environmental performance of rich-protein foods based on life cycle analysis. Laura Batlle Bayer, PhD, Sahar Azarkamand, PhD., Alba Bala, and Pere Fullana, along with researchers from the Universidad de Cantabria and the Universitat de Lleida, developed a new, complex nutrition-based model for life cycle assessments of protein-rich foods. The study's findings reveal that while animal products generally have poor environmental profiles, they are not always the worst. #Sustainability #LifeCycle #LCA

Cristina Campos Herrero, researcher at the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change at ESCI-UPF, attended the 19th SDEWES Centre Annual Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems. At the conference, the researcher had the opportunity to present the results of the #CICEP project, a study coordinated by the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) and counts on the participation of partners from the Universitat de Girona (UdG) and ESCI-UPF, as well as the Politecnico di Milano in the calculation of social impacts. #LifeCycle #WasteManagement #LCA

Cristina Campos, researcher at the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change at ESCI-UPF, shares the results of the CICEP project presented by Dr Alba Bala at the 14th International Conference LCA FOOD 2024, held last month in Barcelona. Growing concerns about plastic pollution highlight the need for sustainable waste management, especially in regions lacking proper infrastructure like the Canary Islands, Spain. To address this issue, the CICEP project focuses on recycling plastics and reusing waste from banana farming, following the principles of a circular economy. The project is coordinated by the Integrated and Advanced Manufacturing of the School of Industrial and Civil Engineering (Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) with the collaboration of LEPAMAP-PRODIS (Universitat de Girona) and ESCI-UPF, as well as the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering - Politecnico di Milano. #LCA #WasteManagement #Sustainability

At the 14th LCA FOOD 2024 International Conference, the world’s leading forum on sustainable food, Sahar Azarkamand, PhD., researcher at the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change at ESCI-UPF, presented two posters showcasing the outcomes of two distinct projects in which the UNESCO Chair participates. The first poster was about the #REBO2VINO project, which studies wine packaging and environmental impact in Spain. The second one was a project developed with other ESCI-UPF UNESCO Chair researchers (Pere Fullana, Alba Bala, Ilija Sazdovski) and Laura Batlle Bayer, PhD. about the environmental cost of animal and plant-based proteins. Dr Alba Bala, Executive Director of the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change at ESCI-UPF, chaired two conferences at the 14th edition of the LCA FOOD 2024. This event, which brings together global experts in sustainable food systems, is recognised as one of the most important in the LCA community.
