Muchos ya sabrán que en julio de 2023📅, la #ComisiónEuropea 🌍 presentó una #propuesta para la revisión de la directiva marco de #residuos de la #UE. Una revisión que incluye objetivos jurídicamente vinculantes para la reducción del desperdicio alimentario para #2030. El reciente 17 de junio de 2024 se anunció que el #Consejo ha iniciado unas negociaciones con el #ParlamentoEuropeo para la revisión de los objetivos propuestos en la #Directiva marco sobre residuos. “El Consejo pide que se reduzca el desperdicio de alimentos para 2030, de la siguiente manera: ➡️- 10% en transformación y fabricación. ➡️- 30% per cápita conjuntamente en #comercios, #restaurantes, #servicios de #alimentación y #hogares.” “Además, los #ministros acordaron hacer posible el establecimiento de objetivos para los alimentos comestibles a finales de #2027, cuando la Comisión revise los #objetivos2030.” Esta noticia no nos resulta nada sorprendente, más bien todo lo contrario, esperábamos novedades de la Comisión Europea cuanto antes. ¿Por qué?: Cada año se generan en la #UE más de 58 millones de toneladas de #desperdicioalimentario: → Equivale a 131 kg por habitante 🙍♀️🙍♂️. → Representa una pérdida estimada de 132 mil millones de euros 💰💸. El desperdicio de alimentos representa alrededor del 16% de las #emisiones totales de #gases de #efectoinvernadero 🔥 del sistema alimentario de la UE. El objetivo general de la propuesta, de revisión de la directiva marco sobre residuos que ha hecho la Comisión Europea, es reducir los impactos ambientales y climáticos asociados con la generación y gestión de residuos textiles y alimentarios. ¿Y sabes qué? Tetra Pak announced findings from a survey conducted as part of its "Go Nature Go Carton” campaign. The study aimed to understand the actions taken by consumers to conserve the environment on a country level. Among the group of Saudi consumers interviewed, 63% reported that they sort plastic packages for recycling and 58% sort carton packages, while 27% used a reusable or refillable package for food and/or beverages, with 28% of the interviewed admitting to have purchased a product because it had environment friendly packaging and 25% opting for packages made from recycled materials - indicating a high level of environmental awareness and sustainable practices in the country. Un estudio de Zero Waste Europe indica que en España no se recicla un 71% de las botellas de plástico de un solo uso de hasta 3L como indica ecoembes. Según este análisis, el porcentaje es solo del 36% para 2021. La Ley 7/2022, de residuos y suelos contaminados para una economía circular, indica que para 2023 el porcentaje debería ser como mínimo un 70%, llegando al 77% en 2025.

🚨 Advocating for Safer Food Contact Materials and a Circular Economy 🚨 Reusable Packaging Europe (RPE) is proud to join forces with Zero Waste Europe and other organizations in co-signing an urgent letter to President Ursula von der Leyen. Together, we call for the long-overdue revision of the EU Food Contact Materials (FCM) Regulation (EC 1935/2004), which is critical to safeguarding public health and advancing the EU’s sustainability goals. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: The EU's current FCM regulations fail to address harmful chemicals present in food packaging—many of which are linked to rising cancer rates, infertility, and metabolic diseases. This regulatory gap not only endangers human health but also undermines trust in sustainable solutions, including reusable packaging. 🌱 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴: RPE’s reusable transport packaging systems, like Reusable Packaging Containers (RPCs), demonstrate that reuse is the most efficient, safe and sustainable way forward. These systems: • Reduce waste by replacing single-use packaging. • Improve safety by eliminating harmful chemicals. • Drive circularity in supply chains, fully aligning with the EU’s Green Deal and waste hierarchy. ⏰ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺: We, alongside Zero Waste Europe, emphasize that harmonized, science-based FCM regulations are essential to: • Protect consumers by ensuring safety across all materials—virgin, recycled, or alternative. • Support circular solutions like reusable packaging. • Accelerate the transition to a sustainable, waste-free future. 📣 𝗔 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: The next decade is critical for reducing long-term chemical risks. We urge the EU to prioritize reuse, finalize the FCM revision, and establish clear regulations to ensure health and sustainability go hand in hand.
