𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 (𝐂𝐨𝐄) 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐚 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬. From December 9-13, 2024, CBMP - Capacity Building and Mentorship Program in Ethiopia Universities in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and HABTech Solutions, organized a workshop to develop Center of Excellence (CoE) and Demonstration Woreda guidelines. This initiative is a significant step toward strengthening Ethiopia’s health information systems. CBMP universities have been at the forefront of efforts to strengthen the health system by generating evidence on priority digital systems through Center of Excellences (University of Gondar has been working on DHIS2 and interoperability CoE, Jimma University on eCHIS and Haramaya University on EMR, Addis Ababa University on Data Analytics). The universities involvement in this workshop ensured the guidelines align with ongoing work to enhance local evidence generation, creating model woredas and achieve sustainable health system improvements. These guidelines are set to serve as a foundation for integrating evidence-based practices into Ethiopia’s health sector, further supporting CBMP’s commitment to enhancing the digital health and health information systems nationwide.

Recently, Prof. Binyam Tilahun, PhD,MPH,FIAHSI and our CDHi- Center for Digital Health and Implementation Science team participated in a significant meeting with Dr. Mekdes Daba Feyssa, MD, MPH (Minister of health), Dr. Maramawit Asfaw (RMNCH Director), the Digital Health Directorate team, and World Health Organization representatives from both HQ and Ethiopia. The discussion highlighted the progress of the WHO DAKs Implementation Research, a groundbreaking initiative launched under the Ministry of Health’s leadership. 🌍 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐩 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 🚀 Last week, the Global Digital Health Forum (GDHF) brought together innovators, leaders, and organizations from around the world to Nairobi, Kenya, from December 4–6, 2024. We’re grateful to have been part of this impactful gathering focused on advancing digital health, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Our team at CDHi- Center for Digital Health and Implementation Science led by our center director Prof. Binyam Tilahun, PhD,MPH,FIAHSI actively participated, sharing our experiences, learning from global perspectives, and contributing to discussions shaping the future of digital health. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐝: 🌟 Digital Transformation in Africa: Progress across countries is accelerating, offering valuable lessons for our work. 🌟 AI and Interoperability: Key themes included standardization and AI, with a focus on building reliable health solutions. 🌟 WHO Smart Guidelines: Countries are embracing this approach to standardize health systems; Ethiopia shared its lessons on DAKs IR. 🌟 Ethiopia’s advancements in digital health were widely recognized, highlighting contributions from the Ministry of Health and local partners. A special recognition to our CDHi team Prof Binyam Tilahun, PhD,MPH,FIAHSI, Admas Abera, Dr. Tesfahun Melese Yilma, Dr. Amare Tariku and Betelhem Abebe Andargie who participated in various sessions, contributed to panel discussions, and brought valuable insights back to further our mission in digital health. and to whom organized this amazing event Looking forward to contributing even more in the coming year!

Our team is back home after an impactful week at the #GDHF2024 in Nairobi. The event brought together the global digital health community, and we were thrilled to learn, share, and contribute. #DigitalHealth #CDHi

It was a great experience participating in the Global Digital Health Forum in Kenya. On behalf of the CHDI-University of Gondar and Johns Hopkins University team, I presented our research outputs on access to digital health technologies, socio-economic equity, and its contribution to the coverage of reproductive, maternal, and child health services in Ghana and Rwanda. This research work was part of the Global Digital Health Exemplar project (within the Exemplar in Global Health initiative), and has been led by the University of Gondar and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The study intended to identify and document valuable lessons learned from countries that have successfully implemented digital health solutions to transform primary healthcare service delivery. Our colleagues from Johns Hopkins University (Shivani, Lena and Surchi) shared insightful experiences from Finland, Brazil, and India, highlighting successful models of integrating digital health technologies within their primary healthcare systems. The firsthand experiences shared by the in-country teams from Ghana and Rwanda (Dr. Baba, Dr. Attoney, Dr. Hinda, Borris and Christiane) enriched the discussions and provided crucial context. Our results showed improvements in households’ access to digital health technologies, with significant pro-rich and -educated socio-economic inequities, over a decade (2010-2022) in Ghana and Rwanda. The variations in women’s access to digital health technologies contributed to about two-thirds of inequities in the utilization of reproductive, maternal, and child health services in both African countries. In addition to the socio-economic disparities, we are about to finish the geographic lenses of inequities in access to digital health technologies and coverage of reproductive, maternal, and child health services in these African countries.  Grateful to the Principal Investigators of this project (Prof Binyam, Dr. Smisha and Dr. Patty), Betelhem Abebe, Dr. Tesfahun Melese, Admas Abera, and the entire research team.

𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭-𝟐 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 : 𝐂𝐨-𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 From October 30 to November 12, 2024 – CDHi- Center for Digital Health and Implementation Science at the University of Gondar , in partnership with ThinkPlace’s Ethiopia Ethiopia Data Use Partnership (DUP) Stream-2 project, conducted a facility-level co-design session at Gondar, St. Gebriel and Maraki health centers. This session focused on building upon lessons learned from the first sprint of prototype testing. The primary goal was to build lessons and refine prototypes for the Test Sprint 2 by engaging health facility staff directly in the process. The session included facility observation, interviews, active discussions with service providers and facility leaders, reflections on the outcomes of Test Sprint 1. Insights and evidence were generated and synthesized, ensuring an informed co-design and refinement of prototypes for Sprint 2 implementation. At the conclusion, at each health centers prototypes were optimized for the next testing phase, with staff demonstrating their commitment by signing a “commitment board” one of the behavioral prototypes selected. This enthusiastic participation underscored the team’s readiness and motivation to implement the prototypes in the coming phase.
