Over 12 million people currently suffer from leishmaniasis, and approximately 2 million new cases occur each year. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a life-threatening form of leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania donovani or L. infantum. Over 40% of VL cases caused by L. donovani are reported from East Africa, particularly Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan, and Ethiopia. Abhay Satoskar, a co-principal investigator and professor of pathology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, is leading the effort with co-principal investigator Damaris Matoke-Muhia, principal research scientist at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). Ohio State Global One Health is leading the Ethiopia project together with key collaborating institutes and researchers. Wondwossen Gebreyes Zelalem Mekuria, DVM, PhD.
