The Ohio State Global One Health initiative (GOHi) continuously works on life-changing projects. GOHi recently provided hospitals in Ethiopia with equipment and supplies, enhancing the hospitals' abilities to provide microbiology services and implement infection prevention and control practices as part of GAIHN-AR, a global network of healthcare facilities, laboratories and infection, prevention and control teams. As we wrap up International Education Week, we're proud to celebrate the many ways GOHi improves lives around the world. #IEW2024

“The Abyss of a Good Book” earned the People’s Choice award in the Arts & Culture Category of the 2024 International Photography Exhibition. An international graduate student from Canada, Danica Matovic captured the image at the Municipal Library of Prague in Czechia. Matovic is doctoral student in The Ohio State University College of Medicine studying neuroscience. “Other than being mesmerizing to stare down the abyss of meticulously placed books, the metaphor of falling down the rabbit hole and immersing ourselves in a mesmerizing book made me capture this photo,” Matovic explained. Congratulations Jennifer Heaton on your Best in Show image in The Ohio State University Office of International Affairs 2024 International Photography Exhibition. I've been managing this competition for 17 years and am always impressed by the wonderful captures by all our Buckeye photographers. Jen has been featured in the exhibition multiple times, but this is the first time she's won the top prize - well deserved! This year more than 425 students, staff, faculty and alumni entered photos in the competition! https://lnkd.in/g7wmwNHW #BuckeyesAbroad

A senior content specialist and staff photographer at the The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Wendy Pramik was awarded 2nd Place in the Arts & Culture Category of the 2024 International Photography Exhibition for her image “Grace and Restraint.” "While attending a photography workshop in Cuba in February 2024, I had the opportunity to photograph ballerinas from Cuba’s acclaimed Ballet Nacional de Cuba at a mansion in the Vedado neighborhood. We worked individually with the dancers, requesting that they pose in various spaces. I focused on adding depth to my photos by incorporating elements in both the foreground and background. I particularly liked this photo because I felt it captured the significance of ballet in Cuban culture—where ballerinas earn a respectable wage of $30 a month—while also highlighting the limitations on freedom of expression in a country where the government controls all media and restricts access to outside information,” Pramik explains. International education is all about expanding horizons, making connections, and establishing mutual understanding between people around the globe. Ohio State Department of Anthropology doctoral student Butch Wright conducted dissertation research in a predominantly indigenous, multiethnic community near Parque das Tribos in Manaus, Brazil. His research exploring issues related to food insecurity and indigenous identity was made possible via Fulbright-Hays funding provided by the U.S. Department of Education. #BuckeyesAbroad #IEW2024 #InternationalEducationWeek #FulbrightHays
Doctoral Candidate at the Ohio State University specializing in biocultural anthropology, with focus on food security, subsistence, and social networks. My focus is the Brazilian Amazon and the Ecuadorean Tropical Andes.
Two years ago I received the prestigious Fulbright Hays DDRA fellowship to conduct my fieldwork in Parque das Tribos, a predominantly Indigenous, multiethnic community on the urban periphery of Manaus, Brazil. I got to know and work with absolutely amazing people there, and though finishing my dissertation has taken a bit longer than I had anticipated (though I’m nearly there now), I have fascinating data that are providing incredible insight into the amazing support network within the community and its impact on their food security. This week I was so incredibly thrilled for my friends in Parque das Tribos to learn that President Biden, the first sitting U.S. president to travel to the Amazon, will be visiting this amazing community, meeting with the leadership there to hear what they have to say. I hope he and his delegation are as impressed and impacted by them as I continue to be! #ParquedasTribos
