Excited to share the successful commissioning of the Gera Solar Minigrid Extension Project, completed on November 22, 2024! We've significantly increased access to clean energy in Gera, Konso, boosting the system's capacity from 140 kWp to 174.1 kWp. This expansion, achieved in partnership with BOS Balance of Storage Systems AG and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH with European Union and Energising Development (EnDev) funding, will power more than 1000 single-phase households and 43 three-phase commercial connections. The upgrade includes a 34.1 kW PV capacity increase, a 45 kVA battery inverter, a 27 kVA string inverter, and a 76.8 kWh LiFEPO4 battery bank. 🌍 Renewable Energy Solution Project Ethiopia - Part 2: Reliable Energy for Households, Shops, and Farmers in Oborso East The recent electrification project in Oborso East has brought life-changing benefits to around 900 households, local farmers, and businesses 💡 For the people of Oborso East, this means a significant improvement in several aspects of their daily lives: ✅ Affordable, Reliable Power for All With our solar-powered off-grid system, residents now have 24/7 access to stable, affordable energy. This accessibility is making daily life easier and supporting economic growth by reducing the financial strain of diesel and kerosene, allowing more money to stay within the community. Families, local farmers, and business owners are all benefiting from reliable electricity at a fraction of the cost they previously faced. 🤫 Quiet and Clean Energy Before this project, Oborso East was filled with the noise and air pollution of diesel engines, and homes relied on kerosene lamps, which posed fire risks. Now, our solar-based solution provides quiet, safe, and sustainable energy, creating a peaceful environment for the community. The elimination of noisy generators has not only improved quality of life but also made Oborso East a safer, cleaner place to live. 🌱 Support for Local Shops and Farmers With reliable electricity, local shops can operate fans, power lights, and store goods safely, and cafés can keep customers comfortablel. Farmers now have the option to use essential machinery, which can enhance productivity and yield. This boost in infrastructure directly supports the growth of small businesses and agriculture, two vital economic drivers in rural communities. Renewable Energy Solutions Project Ethiopia - Part 1: Building Sustainable and Cost-Effective Off-Grid Energy Solutions for Rural Villages In August 2024, we completed an electrification project in Oborso East, one of five villages in Ethiopia that we've connected to power over the past year. This project was carried out in partnership with our local partner Green Scene Energy and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH with co-funding by the EU and Energising Development (EnDev). ⚠️ Before the project, Oborso East relied on noisy, hazardous diesel generators and kerosene lamps for power. The village was often filled with the sounds and the pollution of diesel engines, which were not only loud but also posed a fire risk. Together with GiZ and Green Scene, we have delivered a transformative solution, providing 24/7 independent energy to around 900 households. Our system, with 200 kWp of solar capacity and 400 kWh of lithium battery storage, operates completely off-grid but can integrate with diesel generators or the utility grid in the future if needed. 🛠️ Achieving this milestone, however, required careful coordination and overcoming several challenges. The key components were pre-built and tested in Germany before deployment, and we had to adapt to the hilly terrain in Oborso East by leveling the ground to install the solar panels. Logistical and legal preparations were also crucial, given Ethiopia’s regulatory environment and the vast, remote locations. 💡 This project underscores the power of teamwork, innovation, and a shared commitment to #sustainability. The impact on the local community is significant — energy is now accessible and safe. Beyond lighting, the village can now support cooling and ventilation for commercial shops and cafés, dramatically improving daily life. Solar Energy Powers Life-Saving Surgeries in Ethiopia💡   Imagine a child in desperate need of surgery, but the operating room is plunged into darkness, the life-saving equipment silent. This was the harsh reality for many children in Ethiopia, until now.  We have brought light to the lives of these children by installing solar-powered facilities at three hospitals in Ethiopia: Yekatit 12 Hospital Medical College , Alert Hospital, and Medewelabu Hospital. This project was undertaken in partnership with Kids Operating Room. These facilities now power critical surgical equipment in the children's operating rooms, ensuring uninterrupted procedures and better outcomes for young patients.  No longer will darkness hinder hope. Now, doctors can perform life-saving surgeries with confidence, and children have a brighter chance at a healthy future. This is just one example of how we are using solar energy to revolutionize healthcare access and quality in underserved communities.
