The first Menstrual Advancement Platform—Public Private Dialogue (MAP-PPD)'s Forum was held on December 5, 2024, at Skylight Hotel, Addis Ababa. This Forum is a key component of the MAP-PPD's cyclic public-private dialogue process and marks a significant step in addressing systemic challenges in the Menstrual Health and Hygiene (MHH) sector. Menstrual Advancement Platform (MAP), a Public-Private Dialogue (PPD) financed by Agence Française de Développement and facilitated by East Africa Gate (EAGate) as the Permanent Secretariat of the PPD platform, facilitating coordination and collaboration among stakeholders, has conducted its first Steering Committee meeting on August 6th, 2024. Under the joint leadership of H.E. Ergogie Tesfaye, Minister of Women and Social Affairs, and H.E. Mekdes Daba Feyssa, MD, MPH, Minister of Health, the meeting deliberated on issues to ensure affordable, accessible, and quality menstrual hygiene products for women and girls in Ethiopia. The meeting addressed key challenges, including local industry issues, quality control and regulatory hurdles, price control, distribution, financial, and awareness problems surrounding menstrual health and hygiene. Further, collaboration efforts were highlighted, and the responsibilities of each stakeholder were deliberated upon for effectively tackling the bottlenecks. Menstrual Advancement Platform (MAP), a Public Private Dialogue financed by Agence Française de Développement, and facilitated by East Africa Gate (EAGate) as the Permanent Secretariat of the PPD platform, facilitating coordination and collaboration among stakeholders, has conducted the quarterly second round of discussion group meetings is excited to share the outcomes of our second round of discussion group meetings, held from June 17-20, 2024, focusing on crucial areas within the Menstrual Health and Hygiene (MHH) sector hindering accessibility, affordability, and quality of MHH products. During these sessions, the four discussion groups revisited and validated the bottlenecks affecting the private sector, that were raised during the first discussion group held back in March 2024. The members from the public, private and non-government stakeholders also identified new bottlenecks and challenges within the MHH sector, providing valuable insights and solutions. The discussions delved into four key areas: 1. Regulatory Framework, Certification & Standards 2. Financial Barriers to MHH Production & Distribution 3. Distribution, including Last Mile Distribution 4. Awareness and Communication During the sessions, participants in each group actively engaged in exploring challenges and opportunities, emphasizing the importance of regulatory compliance, financial accessibility, efficient distribution networks, and robust awareness campaigns. The Menstrual Advancement Platform (MAP) is a national dialogue, whereby the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs plays a key role in supporting the Public Private Dialogue (PPD) platform as an umbrella organization, to optimize the production and distribution of MHH products by engaging policymakers to ensure accessibility, affordability, and quality of Menstrual Health and Hygiene (MHH) products. From March 4th to 7th, 2024, the PPD platform’s discussion groups embarked on a series of engaging sessions focusing on identifying bottlenecks affecting the private sector from achieving adequate production and distribution of the #MHH sector in Ethiopia. These are: - - #Regulatory framework, certification & standards - #Financial barriers to MHH production & distribution - #Distribution, including last mile distribution; and - #Awareness and communication. This platform is financed by Agence Française de Développement, a feminist development agency, through the implementation of a PPD.
