🌍 Tackling pellet loss & microplastic pollution – Join the discussion! On March 14, 2025 (CET 12-14), the 4R Ecosystem Regulation Node will host an event focused on the regulation on reducing microplastic pollution from plastic pellet losses. This critical discussion brings together stakeholders from Governance, Business, Academia, Civil Society, and Capital to explore the impact of upcoming EU legislation and the path to zero pellet loss. 🎤 We are pleased to introduce Suikkanen Sanna from Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) - Suomen ympäristökeskus (Syke) as one of our speakers. Sanna will present findings from a 2023 survey on plastic pellet distribution along Finland’s coast, highlighting challenges in tracing pollution sources. Her research, using both beach monitoring and citizen observations, found widespread polyethylene and polypropylene pellets—a clear sign of the urgent need for regulation. Looking ahead, a new international project (2025-2026) will refine monitoring methods for the Baltic Sea. 📢 The EU’s upcoming pellet loss regulation aims to cut microplastic pollution by 30% by 2030, setting strict requirements across the supply chain, transportation, and waste management. With trilogue negotiations underway, now is the time to engage! 🔗 Join us in shaping the future of microplastic regulation! 📅 14 March 2025 | ⏰ CET 12-14 ➡️Register here: https://lnkd.in/dBEpcZmc #MicroplasticPollution #PelletLoss #EURegulation #4RRegulationNode #Sustainability #PlasticFreeSeas #4R

Watch the 4R Open Innovation Ecosystem video! ♻️ Every year, over 450 million tons of plastic are produced globally. While plastics play a crucial role in industries like packaging, healthcare, and renewable energy, their fossil-based production and inefficient waste management contribute to pollution, resource depletion, and long-term environmental harm. To tackle this urgent challenge, the 4R Innovation Ecosystem unites businesses, researchers, policymakers, and communities to create a waste-free, sustainable future for plastics. Guided by the 4R principles—Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle—we are rethinking material flows, extending product lifetimes, and driving bold collaboration across sectors. Join us in shaping a truly circular economy—where waste becomes opportunity, and sustainability fuels innovation. The time to act is now. Be part of the change! 🚀 ▶️You can also watch the video on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/eU5NK9mg More info on 4R Ecosystem: https://lnkd.in/eeccZZ5D #recycle #refuse #reuse #reduce #plasticschallenge #circulareconomy

🚀 Clean Industrial Deal: From words to action! The European Commission’s Clean Industrial Deal (CID) highlights the importance of lead markets, with hydrogen technology at the core. Supporting demand, simplifying permitting, and ensuring a cross-sector approach are crucial to unlocking its full potential. 💡“By incentivising demand and rewarding early movers, CID can jumpstart Europe’s clean tech sectors, including hydrogen. But words must turn into action – without progress in 18 months, 2030 targets are at risk!” – Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, Hydrogen Europe ➡️Read more: https://lnkd.in/eR9QbbKt #CleanIndustrialDeal #Hydrogen #EU2030 #EnergyTransition #GreenE2

4R Ecosystem Regulation Node Event: Tackling Microplastic Pollution – The EU’s New Regulation on Plastic Pellet Losses 📅 Date & Time: Friday 14th March, 2025 | 13:00 – 15:00 EET | 12:00-14:00 CET 📍 Location: Virtual (Meeting link sent upon registration) 📝 Registration: https://lnkd.in/dBEpcZmc 🔍 Focus: This event will explore the implications of the new Pellet Loss Regulation from multiple perspectives, including governance, business, academia, civil society, and capital. Speakers will discuss the regulation’s impact, its enforcement, and best practices for compliance. About the event: The 4R Ecosystem Regulation Node events provide a deep dive into regulations shaping the future of plastic materials and their use. This session will focus on the EU’s new regulation on reducing microplastic pollution from plastic pellet losses. Join experts from governance, business, academia, and civil society as they examine the regulation’s objectives, expected impacts, and implementation challenges. The event will feature keynote speeches from leading experts and stakeholders: • Merja Saarnilehto, Finnish Ministry of the Environment – Overview of the regulation and its current legislative status • Vesa Karha, Finnish Plastics Industries Federation – Regulations implications to the business stakeholders • Suikkanen Sanna Finnish Environment Institute – Insights from recent research on plastic pellet pollution along Finland’s coastline Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in discussions and ask questions about how the regulation affects different sectors and what steps can be taken to achieve compliance and minimize microplastic pollution. About the regulation: The European Union is advancing a regulation to prevent plastic pellet losses, a major source of microplastic pollution. First proposed by the European Commission on October 16, 2023, this regulation enforces best practices across the entire plastic supply chain, including production, processing, transportation, and waste management. Key Milestones in the Legislative Process • April 23, 2024: The European Parliament adopts its position • December 17, 2024: The Council of the EU reaches a general approach • 2025: Trilogue negotiations ongoing, with final adoption anticipated The importance of the regulation: Plastic pellet losses are the third-largest source of unintentional microplastic releases into the EU environment. The regulation aims to achieve zero pellet loss through mandatory handling measures, certification requirements, and self-declaration. It applies to all operators handling plastic pellets in quantities above 5 tonnes per year, including EU and non-EU carriers transporting pellets within the EU. By 2030, the EU aims to reduce microplastic pollution by 30%, making this regulation a key step toward a more sustainable and circular plastics economy. #recycling #circulareconomy #plasticschallenge #regulation #bioeconomy #4R
