The Digital Defence Ecosystem has completed its first two-year funding period, Season One. Now, it’s time for Season Two. After Season One, we have gained a clear understanding of who we are and what we do. DDE is the link between three worlds: we are a network of leading Finnish defence and technology companies plus research institutes, developing new digital defence solutions for international markets. Season Two is all about how we do it: ✅ From innovations to capabilities – DDE supports Finnish technology companies in entering the competitive and highly regulated global defence market. ✅ New defence – We bridge the gap between civilian and defence technologies. ✅ Mobilising innovation ecosystems – We support the Finnish export industry by ensuring sufficient expertise and production capabilities, safeguarding the defence sector’s security of supply in Finland. 📢 The European Defence Agency (#EDA) has published today its latest annual Defence Data report, detailing defence spending from all 27 EU Member States. At a record €279 billion, 2023 European defence spending increased by 10% on the previous year, marking the ninth year of consecutive growth. Second day of NATO Edge 24 starting in Tampa. Yesterday we heard great insights from NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCI Agency), NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA), NATO DIANA and Headquarters, US Special Operations Command as well as industry representatives. The common message also here, we need to act together, we need to have sense of urgency and we need to be able to take new technologies faster into operational use. Meet a DDE member! Nokia is a global leader in commercial 5G mobile broadband technology, also providing private wireless solutions and ultra-reliable, mission-critical applications, among other technologies. Ville-Veikko Mattila, Head of Multimedia Technologies, explains why their 5G technology is valuable to the Digital Defence Ecosystem.   "Nokia develops communication technology for communication service operators. We build scalable, secure, and resilient networks that meet the requirements of the defence sector. 5G has emerged as a focus area in defence because it provides high data transfer speeds, extremely stable data transmission, and responsive, low-latency performance.”   ℹ️ Why are you a DDE member?   "In addition to communication technology, Nokia is a leader in multimedia technology development. We focus on standardizing both areas to bring high-performance dual-use technology to the forefront. In modern warfare, AI and system interoperability are crucial. Through DDE, we combine top solutions with other members and advocate for their international use."   ℹ️ What projects are you working on now?   "One example is Nokia’s RXRM solution (Real-time eXtended Reality Multimedia) that offers ground-breaking real-time 360° video and spatial 3D audio, with numerous defence applications. Real-time audio and video can be used for remote training, remote control, machine operation and repair, or integrated with augmented reality applications."   ℹ️ Which themes interest you the most?   "We’re interested in the digital soldier theme and in-hand situational awareness. This dual-use technology, with immersive audio and AI, allows real-time awareness of team members’ locations through Nokia’s Immersive Voice solution based on the upcoming 3GPP IVAS (Immersive Voice and Audio Services) voice and audio codec. Another area is digital demining, where we’ve launched a co-innovation project using sensors like ground-penetrating radars to detect landmines or perhaps integrate such systems into drones."   ℹ️ What are your expectations for DDE?   "I hope DDE can stimulate growth and innovation in Finland’s tech sector, with members working in AI, cybersecurity, robotics, and satellite technology, among other things. DDE can support start-ups to attract R&D investments. Key co-innovation partners for international collaboration in digital defence include NATO, the EU, and EDF (European Defence Fund). DDE’s member companies span various industries, enabling effective collaboration and innovative joint solutions." Great meeting at the Eduskunta | Riksdagen | Parliament of Finland on Wednesday! Organised by Jarkko Surakka, Business Joensuu Oy, Jarno Limnell and Dr. Juhani Suhonen, the meeting’s focus was on the initiative to create the world's best next-generation living lab site in Joensuu, Finland, called BorderLand. This initiative aims to revolutionize the Finnish approach to defence technology and border security, aiming to create an ecosystem welcoming military and non-military stakeholders alike from U.S. D.o.D and NATO value chain to Finland in order to collaborate and co-create new innovations and capabilities. While last week’s spotlight was mainly on Slush 2024, there were many other interesting and important events happening in Finland. Here’s what we’ve been up to during these hectic weeks: 🗓️ The launch of DEFINE – Finland's first defence tech accelerator With their grand opening last Friday, Defence Innovation Network Finland (DEFINE)'s accelerator is now up and running in Riihimäki. Congratulations to all startups included in the Fall '24 batch: Atle Defence Technologies, Foxa Oy, Lowkey, MONAVA AB, RAIN, ReFaMo, ReLoc, Sapper Intelligence, SeeTrue Technologies, Tambest Oy, Tespack Ltd and Viima Aerospace Technologies! Redstone's Kaj Hagros said it best: “There is no faster mechanism to react to market changes than the startup ecosystem.” This is very much on point – startups have the agility to develop new innovations and bring new products and prototypes to markets quickly. This fearless mentality is essential for mobilizing defence innovations in a shifting landscape. 🗓️ PIA ry’s Defence Attaché meeting PIA’s traditional industrial meeting with the Defence Attachés accreditated to Finland was once again a great event for fostering collaboration across borders. The Defence Attachés were briefed with a topical overview of the Finnish defense industry and enjoyed the showcases by our member companies. A great big thank you to PIA - Finnish Defence and Aerospace Industries for hosting the event, great to see many DDE members represented! 🗓️  Business Joensuu Oy's Borderland – Security Eastern Finland event Eastern Finland is joining forces to bring companies (such as DDE members Kelluu and Kuva Space) and investors together, fostering new innovations plus opportunities in border security and dual-use technologies. It was great to meet and hear from companies with a true will to defend and collaborate! 🗓️  Next stop: NATO Edge We’ll be heading to Florida to NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCI Agency)’s flagship event NATO Edge 3–5 December. Exciting developments in Finnish defence innovation! 🇫🇮🚀 Today, I had the privilege of organising a groundbreaking meeting at the Finnish Parliament in collaboration with Business Joensuu Oy and Jarno Limnell and Dr. Juhani Suhonen. We brought together key players in the defence sector to discuss the future of innovation and security in Finland. Our mission?  To create the world's best next-generation living lab site in Joensuu, Finland, called BorderLand in collaboration with our U.S. partners from Georgia Tech Research Institute and U. S.
