"In Finland we have decided already years ago that AI is a national top priority for us," said PM Petteri Orpo at the recent AI Action Summit in Paris. One part of this vision is the launch of ELLIS Institute Finland, the newest branch of the pan-European institution for machine learning research ELLIS - European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems. Another is the European AI Factories, one of which will be in Finland, with the next-gen AI-optimized LUMI supercomputer. (More on that and the EU's InvestAI initiative below 👇) Our researchers will have access to these research infrastructures and more, in a country that is investing 4% GDP in RDI. Join us! ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dTnZKk68
🚀 At the #AIActionSummit in Paris, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced the new EU InvestAI initiative, aiming to mobilise €200 billion in AI investment to strengthen Europe’s leadership in artificial intelligence. 🇪🇺 To make Europe one of the leading AI continents, the EU will focus on major initiatives like AI Factories and AI GigaFactories: 12 AI hubs providing scientists and startups with access to world-class EuroHPC supercomputers, ensuring AI is trained on high-quality industrial and public data. 🌟 LUMI AI Factory placed in Finland is among the first seven AI Factories selected by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU), set to be deployed across Europe. These AI Factories will unite EU and national resources to support AI startups, SMEs, and researchers with cutting-edge HPC resources, training, and technical expertise. Our Managing Director Kimmo Koski represented the LUMI supercomputer and the upcoming LUMI AI Factory at the summit. “This investment will strengthen Europe’s strategic capabilities. The productivity potential of supercomputers is significant – according to a study by an independent research agency Taloustutkimus in 2024, one euro invested in CSC’s HPC services brings back 25-37€ as direct economical impact. As the scope and scale of AI application grows, the potential impact is even bigger. But this isn’t only about technology as such - data and human capabilities must be recognised as a critical part of the value chain and developed as an integral part of a competitive European AI and data ecosystem,” Koski says. FCAI's Mikko Kurimo has received funding from Suomen Kulttuurirahasto / Finnish Cultural Foundation to develop new resources and learning materials using artificial intelligence to revitalize and strengthen the use of the Sami language. The project involves close collaboration between experts in speech and language models, Sami language education and indigenous education as well as Sami communities. We look forward to seeing how the project evolves! Congrats Mikko and team! Read more below 👇 and at https://lnkd.in/dKMvPkDm
Ilahduttavia uutisia! Paljon onnea kaikille apurahan saaneille! Lue lisää kaikista apurahan saajista kommenttikentän linkistä. Kuvassa Mikko Kurimo, kuvaaja Jaakko Kahilaniemi.

Big news, indeed! Finland offers a world-class compute infrastructure and great research environment (minimal bureaucracy; emphasis on quality, creativity, and impact over hype). But beyond all these, Finland’s biggest asset is its people – during my time here, I’ve met some of the most amazingly gifted, straightforward, and kind people both within and outside academia and industry. No wonder this society has been able to punch way above its proverbial weight! Now, with the launch of the ELLIS Institute Finland (headed by the inimitable Prof. Samuel Kaski, and backed by the Finnish government as well as wonderful philanthropists such as Peter Sarlin), we’re ready to take it up a notch further. As a member of the inaugural management team, I’ve gladly agreed to spearhead and drive the efforts to attract global talent to Finland. Please spread the word! Drop me a note if you’re someone, or know of others, who might fit the bill for these positions, and we’ll take it forward from there.
I have big news: ELLIS has launched its second major research center, ELLIS Institute Finland; I have agreed to start as its founding director; and we have opened the first call for PI positions in the institute as its first action. This is a major opportunity to establish your research group in the leading European AI research organization ELLIS - European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems, with a competitive research funding package and outstanding compute including LUMI supercomputer. What I personally greatly value is the opportunity to be part of a new institute "start-up" with considerable freedom, and yet having as a community the outstanding Finnish and European ELLIS colleagues. Furthermore, all Finnish universities have partnered with the ELLIS Institute to offer professor positions as a part of the package - which give the new PIs the important access to students and the multidisciplinary faculty and networks. ELLIS started as an initiative to make Europe a globally attractive place for AI research. I have been on board from the very beginning, leading one of the first ELLIS Units in Helsinki, a research program, and the ELISE EU network of AI Excellence Centres for ELLIS. Now I believe we are already very close to achieving that initial goal! The story of my close collaborator since he joined Aalto, prof Vikas Garg, is one example. My story is different but points to the same direction: I have my background in Finland but have recently also received the UKRI Turing AI World-Leading Researcher Fellowship in the UK, established a new Centre for AI Fundamentals (AI-FUN) at the Univ of Manchester, been Research Director of the new The Christabel Pankhurst Institute for Healthcare Tech, and helped launch UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in Decision Making for Complex Systems of Univ of Manchester and Univ of Cambridge, and the AI Hub in Generative Models. Those are incredible opportunities but a new ELLIS Institute is still much more. ELLIS is rapidly establishing itself as a globally leading AI entity with its community of world-leading Fellows and Scholars, and outstanding PhD students. The new ELLIS Institute has the support of an entire nation which realises the importance and value of the field: Finland’s government has pledged to invest 4% of GDP on RDI, private funding for professorships from Foundation PS, key companies as supporters and every Finnish university partnering to offer professor positions in the joint call. This is unheard of—there must be something else magical in Finland than its rating as the happiest country in the world for several years in a row, a result which never ceases to surprise Finns What will happen to my UK activities then, and wonderful colleagues over there? No worries—my research and collaborations will continue to be fully international, and both sides have now gained a very welcome new partnership! This will only be the beginning; stay tuned for more news on this channel!
