Have you heard about concept called Climate Shadow. At Hakwhill we find it very interesting. Climate shadow supports the idea that tourism business could act as a catalyst of change to more sustainable lifestyle.

Today we received some fantastic news! Hawkhill Resort has made it to the finals of the Matka 2025 international travel fair sustainability competition, being one of the five finalists. What makes this even more remarkable is that 40% of the finalists are from Nuuksio Lakeland net work. Congratulations to Haltia Lake Lodge . You are doing amazing work! Water Conservation is done as volunteer work and run by local association in Vihti. Local people and business owners are collaborating for good reason. Siuntionjoen latvajärvien suojeluyhdistys ry = Lasy is a Water Conservation Association Operating in the Villages of Ojakkala and Tervalampi in municipality of Vihti. The association works to improve the condition of lakes Enäjärvi, Poikkipuoliainen , Tervalampi, Huhmarjärvi, and the Siuntio River to reach a good status. The waters from these lakes flow into the Baltic Sea. Improving the state of these lakes has a positive effect on the condition of the sea. The lakes' condition is enhanced through efficient fishing and by reducing external loads. Lasy functions as a fundraising and advocacy organization. Its mission is to raise funds and bring together people and organizations interested in improving the condition of lake nature. One of the most important activities is the autumn seine fishing of the headwater lakes, which we had the opportunity to participate in as a volunteer today at the lake near our property. Juha Uusitalo and many volunteers have made great job for local water conservation. This is a wonderful example that together and with good will and effort big things can start to happen. Hawkhill has supported the association's work for several years and we see it's work very important and valuable. Hawkhill Resort is located at the headwaters of the Siuntio River. Before the restoration of bog Haukansuo , the waters from our marshlands flowed into this water system. The drainage of marshes has significantly deteriorated the condition of lake waters across Finland. Our fields are located in the village of Tervalampi, and a ditch runs directly from them into lake Poikkipuoliben, the largest and, by many measures, most deteriorated of the headwater bodies in the Siuntio River system. We stopped fertilizing the fields three years ago to help reduce our part of the load. The small annual hay harvest is goes to horses at the local vollage stable. The selection was based on votes from tourism professionals. We’re grateful for this wonderful recognition. A huge thank you to Suomen matkailualan liitto SMAL ry and everyone who voted and belived for us!” This award also celebrates our family’s shared values and hard work over generations. Sauna is big part of Finnish life style. Read article about roots of Finnsih sauna culture. At Hawkhill we think that sauna is a heart of cottage and it is an essential part of good cottage experience.

It is very important for Hawkhill Resort to leave as big climate shadow as possible. One important action as land owner is to to consider carefully how we use our land area and also take care of its biodiversity. In summer 2024 our Annu Huotari was coordinating 'Lupin Battle' = concrete action work shops to get rid of alien specie Garden Lupin in Nuuksio upland area in Southern Finland together with 10 Nuuksio Lakeland companies.
