What is the role of micro-organisms in the health of plants and humans? We are constantly looking for new solutions to help us grow more with less and we promote research projects with academic institutions and other industry players. Latest outcome we want to highlight is about Microbiological Quality of Peat-Free Potting Soils. Micro-organisms play an important role in the health of plants, humans, and animals. In humans, the gut microbiome is a key factor for health. In plants, the soil microbiome is a crucial link in the growth and resilience of plants. Currently our team, together with the whole project research team have under review the results of the first phase of this research with six different growing media blends tested on four different types of plants. The results from the study in which the analysis of DNA isolated from the plants are promising. One of the first phase conclusions is that we can at least partially control the composition of the microbiome by the components we add to the growing medium. Kekkilä-BVB Invests in New Wood Fibre Production Line in Grubbenvorst. This new investment enables repurposing side streams of various wood applications into new growing media for the horticulture industry. By investing in our own production line, we ensure steady availability and quality of wood fibre in our production. “We have been investing heavily on innovation of new circular raw materials since 2021, and we are committed to double their share in our production volumes in 2027. None of us want residues in our tomatoes. Our goal is to set residue limits, primarily on a national scale, with the eventual aim of extending these limits across Europe. “Kiertokas” is an important development project we are currently engaged in that aims to address the issue of pesticide residues. It focuses on managing pesticide residues in circular fertilizers and substrates. This initiative holds significant potential for both environmental sustainability and agricultural advancement. The primary objective of this project is to promote the development, production, and use of organic fertilizers. This involves developing practical tools to determine the suitability of recycled raw materials or fertilizers for use. Additionally, we aim to gather crucial information on the concentrations and effects of plant protection agents in recycled raw materials and fertilizers on the environment. By understanding these concentrations and effects, we can propose limit values for residues of the most common pesticides and identify ways to reduce risks associated with their use.
